General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Does anybody have this app? I believe that it is relatively new (there was an iPhone one out first). I've heard that the iPhone app is not very good, however in general I like Chessbase databases. CB light is a solid product, especially for free.
I'm interested to know if the app is worth the 5.99. Currently I use Scid on the go and it is decent, although not exactly overburdened with features. I just like to look at current games when on the go. Somewhat surprisingly SCID does not have a computer analysis option
I use scid too and ICC app, i think they're both awesome. I love going through a couple games while on the bus or in class and I even beat someone on ICC through their app. I'm not so sure the chessbase app would be that much of an improvement over scid. While there's few choices, scid is simple, to the point and its a perfect tool to use for 10-15 minutes. If I want to properly analyze a game, I'd just open up my laptop and analyze from there. I think chessbase is just trying to use its name to sell and I'm never a fan of buying something just for the brand.
I tried DroidFish and it's a very strong chess-playing program but quickly eats up my power. I haven't found any databases or problems, how to set up positions. I prefer to play the beatable (Aart's) Chess for Android for a laugh, to kill 5 minutes while on the subway.
I enjoy a general news page app which lists chess articles.
Has anyone had much luck installing chessbase 9 or deep fritz 8 to an OS X Lion on an iMac? Apple has its own engine that returns but does not seem to import Pgn and am not certain whether those discs have a Mac UCI build for the library, engine or tablebases (not sure of how smart it would be to install the opening books or ending libraries to an external drive if they are being used a lot). The processor is single, with 4 cores of the intel i5. Are there workarounds to not resorting to partitioning a small space for a microwine or windows partition? I'm not sure whether parallels or VMware would be a better way to control a hypervisor instance running as a simulated mode. Is there also a rybka/aquarium build for Mac that would run uci engines?

I do this too, mostly just looking at games though. I found with the ICC app that I was horribly clumsy and slow with the interface. Playing blitz was more or less impossible because I was so slow, always getting flagged. Another issue I had was getting disconnected while playing. This is probably an issue with the cellphone provider, but there is nothing more annoying then getting disconnected in the middle of the game.
I also can't figure out how to go back over the previous moves of a game that is ongoing on the ICC app or if you can listen to Chess.FM for live coverage of tournaments.

Lol, I don't think you can do that on the phone, I use the app mostly for viewing games and I only got it cause it was a free app. I agree that the disconnection is really annoying and that it's very clumsy, but when they offer something for free, it's hard to complain. I'm just hoping that eventually they improve it but I've kinda given up the idea of playing blitz on my phone. The flagging part is the worst...
