  • 3300+ chess tournaments since 1991

I just read a news item about Jay Bonin, age 56, an IM in the US, who has played in more than 3300 TOURNAMENTS since 1991!!!! WOW!!!!! (that translates conservatively to more than 15000 serious tournament games). He also played very actively throughout the 1970's and 1980's. He still maintains a FIDE rating over 2300!!!! Last year alone he played more than 120 FIDE rated games!!!! That is a high quality total - I mean totally serious chess addiction!!!! I thought I was an avid tournament player with 3000+ tournament games in 40 yrs but that is a completely different stratosphere.
For the interesting story go to: www.chesscafe.com/about/newslink.htm and the Daily Chess News column under March 4, 2012. Article is titled: "A Master's Setbacks in Life Inspire Success at the Board" Its from the NY Times. Perhaps someone could provide a more direct link.

Hmm. That works out to about 165 tournaments per year, on average?!?!

Many of the tournaments are/were one-day (or even one-evening) events at various clubs in New York City. He's played in 50 rated events since Nov. 10 (i.e. 50 rated events with ending dates since Nov. 10 - some were multi-day/multi-week events with ending dates within the period).

Jay Bonin - since 1991 at regular USCF time controls (not active, not quick etc) played 740 tournament games against over 2600's, 1213 (2400-2600), 3157 (2200-2400)!, 3069 (2000-2200)!, Total just amongst these: 8179 tournament games!!!! Amazingly, insanely impressive!!!!! An average of over 500 tournament games a year at regular time controls or about 1.5 games a day!!!!!! Again WOW!!
