General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
15. Have fun!
(Thanks to Nigel Hanrahan for writing these up!)
GM Hikaru Nakamura is confirmed for the 2012 Grand Pacific Open in Victoria April 6-9
I didn't watch any of the games this year. Maybe we've become too used to winning at curling. I'm sure a lot of teams give their best effort when they play us.
Careful Gary, this topic now has a "Donut Enter" sign!
You clearly aren't worth it. I don't expect ethics from the majority of people involved with chess administration
in Canada. I expect jokers like you. It would be a welcome change to see professionalism and integrity from those
who are deemed worthy of running youth chess programs. But not expected.

I think you're taking this searching memes up online and posting it to troll others a little overboard. It's only funny if you use it once or twice. The way you're doing it is not working... you don't post 3 in a row without getting any responses. In fact, you're just responding to Duncan's post with one of your memes... and then responding that meme with another one that basically says the same thing. You're just talking to yourself - this isn't the way to properly troll others. Have a look at Aman's posts and see how he times his troll responses and the effect it has on people. I particularly enjoy his later one with Darth Vader in the background saying, I am your father. The point is, you're trying to make fun of someone else but you're just looking like a fool yourself. If you had only responded with 1 meme and waited a while to see what people comment on it, it would have been more effective. But clearly, you didn't know what you were doing and went overboard on trying to diss Duncan. In so doing, as an outsider with no favoritism shown towards either of you, I'd have to side of Duncan on this one and agree that you are indeed, quite a joker.
P.S. Good job on your work so far with the Chess N Math, I'm sure you're probably a cool guy in real life but your posts in this thread seem kinda pointless and you kinda sound like an ass who's dumb. Also, after looking through your 3 different memes, I still have no idea what you were trying to point out.

From, your friendly neighborhood troll scholar
Dear Scholar,
Like Dunky, I'd keep the personal remarks out, thank you - I'm
sure you're a cool guy too, but the fatuous ones you make are
best reflected in the mirror that you find Vlad D glaring back at you!
I'm sure you're the great expert on memes, but I can't help being
amused by your one-dimensional perception of their use, lol! I'm not
trolling your dear Dunky at all, I'm luring him to h7 with curling bait!
Unfortunately, he's thin-skinned enough to rise up up repeatedly:-)
I'm sorry, refresh my memory, what's CMA got to do with cyberfora like
these? I have a million lives away from CMA, and unlike you and your
new-found friend, I don't quote your personal or work backgrounds!
Now, dear meme-expert, can you show me where this meme is copied from?
Re: GM Hikaru Nakamura is confirmed for the 2012 Grand Pacific Open in Victoria April
It doesn't seem like Mr. Smith wishes to entertain us
anymore (sorry Duncan, I was only pulling your leg all
along:-), but if Mr. Cheng wishes to discuss the cons
and prose of meme-chose, maybe we can go elsewhere!
Whilst plenty publicity has been generated for Brian's
promo of Hikaru Nakamura, this thread has in effect,
been mortally hijacked! I'm sure Brian will be relieved:-)
Re: GM Hikaru Nakamura is confirmed for the 2012 Grand Pacific Open in Victoria April
Its funny really that there are millions of viewers to Curling this week, yet the thread is about drawing 100 players to a chess event. So if your objective was to highlight the struggles of Canadian chess, you succeeded. There are literally hundreds of Curling events every year that draw 100 players.
Women's World was sponsored by Ford, Canadian Women's by Scott's Paper. There are other major sponsors in Curling, including M&M Meats, Tim Horton's. These sponsors enjoy the huge cross section of Canadiana that enjoy Curling. On TV, in the clubs. Curling is front and center for a month plus every year. Its mainstream, covering some of the best consumer groups out there. Not only that, Curling is a great way to stay active.
Who is sponsoring these chess events ? Practically nobody. So while you personally profit from young kids in chess, you simultaneously create a situation where chess is a bad place to be when they get older.
ps You don't think I have a sense of humour ? From a guy named Francis ?
Do you really want me to go there ?
Re: GM Hikaru Nakamura is confirmed for the 2012 Grand Pacific Open in Victoria April
These are super "serious" men who play board games a lot. If they've got a sense of humour its well hidden.
On that note, I was watching an old South Park episode the other day. The boys are hooked on some online fantasy game, but keep getting killed off by some high level player who, according to the game creators, must have played nonstop for 18 months. They all play nonstop for weeks in order to kill off this player. The funny part is, the super user character looked exactly like Tom O'Donnell. I thought it was hilarious.
