USA players Jaan Ehlvest and Josh Friedel lead with 6/8, ahead of the pack on 5.5. In today's (Friday) final round, Ehlvest has White against the ever dangerous Alex Shabalov, while Friedel has his hands full as Black against 2602 GM Julio Becerra.

      Ehlvest lives!

Jaan Ehlvest defeated Shabalov to guarantee himself at least a tie for first. In the final position, Ehlvest was a potent bishop ahead, and Shaba didn't have enough of an attack.

Meantime, Josh Friedel is a pawn up but Becerra has a highly centralized position.

Becerra won the Exchange. Friedel has no winning chances in the resulting ending. It looks like a dead draw to me, but Becerra is still playing, so perhaps I'm missing something.

Congratulations to Jaan Ehlvest, Pan American Chess Champion!

          Ehlvest wins.

After a Titanic 131 move struggle ending in bare kings, Josh Friedel passed his baptism of fire against Julio Becerra. With the draw sealed, Jaan Ehlvest wins the Pan American Championship. Friedel places second, possibly tied....
