Kali Holloway, an Outreach Director of Brooklyn Castle, distributed the email:

Brooklyn Castle will screen at the Hot Docs Canadian International Film Festival in Toronto on Tuesday, May 1, at 9:00 p.m. at the ROM Theatre. Before the screening, from 5-7 p.m. at the Hart House on the University of Toronto campus, there will be a documentary tie-in chess event featuring members of the college chess club doing simuls; young elementary-aged chess players from the Chess Institute of Canada playing casual games and learning from their chess elders; blitz rounds and plenty of opportunities for all kinds of great chess play. We invite you and all the young chess enthusiasts from the Greater Toronto Chess League to come out and play and, afterwards, we hope you'll go to the screening of the film. We've hosted similar events at other film festivals and it really makes for a great day of chess and cinema.

I enjoyed the film about the best school chess team in the USA, which comes from a poor neighbourhood in Brooklyn, NY. The filmmakers hung around the chess club for over a year. It focussed on the struggles of a few of the top players (rated 1900s) and one of the lower players with some moving scenes. They have a great full-time chess teacher, supportive Principal and some GM lessons at the Marshall club. They win way too many giant trophies. The school program struggles to pay for team travel despite government cutbacks. Great tournament footage and use of crosstables to have you rootin for them. Unlike the fictional chess-playing movies, these players are intense. Also a variety of enjoyable music including one student's chess rap. Will play again on Saturday and hopefully get a commercial release in the fall.

This documentary has opened in theatres in the US and has been mentioned recently on CBC:

Today, "Seven things kids need to know" mentions the chess program at the school.

"Failure is an important stepping stone on the way to success, because it helps to develop character."

towards the end of the show As It Happens, interview with female African-American teenager who wants to become a master:
