Quebec and Ontario Champions - IMPORTANT

Cheap flights (under $400) are being offered to Halifax on Porter Airlines:

There is currently a promotion on Porter Airlines, 50% off all base fares.

Please book your flight today...Chess'n Math will refund your airline ticket when we get to Halifax.
Just book online before midnight May 4, 2012. Travel by September 4, 2012. Use promo code GOING

For the Quebec team, Team Captain Lefong Hua is booked on the following flight:

Departure from Montreal on May 18th at 16:25, Flight #419
Departure from Halifax on Math 21st at 19:05, Flight #428
Is Chess'n Math refunding flights tickets to all provinces or is just making sure that Quebec team needs to get back in the top?

LOL You always make me laugh Andrei!

Let's take the beautiful province of B.C....all the money that is collected throughout the year at scholastic events...stays within B.C....other than Victoria, the scholastic chess organizers do not even rate their events with us...and in most cases (except for Victoria and a number of schools) they buy their chess books and equipment elsewhere...despite all that the B.C. team gets free lodging at the Nationals for their players as well as a few meals and there is no entry fee....ummm

As I explained to Fred (within the Ontario Chess Challenge thread) when we were discussing this issue and the Ontario team:

    Hi Fred,

It is really simple actually...because Ontario parents, organizers and schools contribute to the cost of sending their team all year long in the form of entry fees and the purchase of chess materials. Organizers pay Ontario Chess Challenge (OCC) regional fees, parents pay entry fees etc.

We appreciate their continued support over all these years!

This covers the cost of sending a team to the Nationals.

    Larry

      While we're on the topic..............................
Whydoesn't BC obtain a Chess n' Math branch? They would get a Strategy Games store in the bargain - better, cheaper and faster chess equipment and books. Surely the initiative must come from the BC organization as I know Larry would not go where he's not invited. THEN you in BC would reap the benefits without demanding a free ride.

Did I mention BC in my post? Did I demand anything?

Forget BC ... is any of the provinces except QC and ON getting a free ride?

Well yes you indicated BC although indirectly...

"Please book your flight today...Chess'n Math will refund your airline ticket when we get to Halifax."

The Botez family is listed on the CFC site as living in Burnaby BC and in the quote you can see that you said when we get to Halifax.

In any event you have no cause to wax indignant in response to my post.

I think it makes perfect sense that Chess n' Math is providing support in the provinces where they do business... They currently have 3 stores: Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. Seems rather straight-forward.

So, the short answer to your question is 'No'.
I think Larry already answered your implied question (why not?)

Although I doubt Larry would ever refuse an order because it comes from somewhere other than Ontario/Quebec, there might not be enough business generated from other locations to justify anything other than order fulfillment.

I seem to recall a number of threads over the last couple of years where the possibility of opening operations in B.C. came up. It seems the reaction was always lukewarm at best. The impression was always that 'chess is fine in B.C. - we don't need anyone from anywhere else helping or telling us what to do...' That is just an impression that I had... of course, it is silly to think anything is so simple or so black and white.

              Hi Vlad,

You are wrong, the quote means someone else says that, not me. In this case, was Larry saying "we". You are free to understand "indirectly" whatever you like, but my girls are not part of BC Chess Challenge 2012 team.

Also I am not indignant, I just made a observation. Have a great day!

You said it better than me Kerry!

Yes we would love to be in B.C. however the Vancouver Chess Mafia (over dramatic I admit...but very real LOL) have told us no THANK-YOU more than once...or they have put conditions in their YES which they knew we could not accept :) .

                I understand that.

Only once did I not consult the local Chess Mafia in a city before setting up our operation....I chose a respected person in that area from the chess community to manage our location...it turned out to be a disaster...we pulled the plug after 3 years of losses. You should have heard the stuff they were saying about us...it was incredible!

Even today...they do not send their youngsters to the Provincial Championship...who is losing in this game of ....

Life is too short...I don't need the aggrevation!

At the present time, at Chess'n Math, we have an incredible dedicated group of staff and teachers. I am proud of all of them!

They are the ones on the ground doing their best for the kids! We (you me...and the whole chess community in Canada) owe them a big thank-you for their extraordinary contribution!

Yesterday, there was an interview in The Globe & Mail that I like very much (I posted this on the CMA site today):

I read an excellent interview in The Globe & Mail yesterday with Paul Alofs, who is the CEO of the Princess Margaret Hospital. He was asked...You don't like the term "not for profit." Why not?

                He responded with:

"Referring to this sector (in terms of) what we are not, as opposed to what we are for, is the wrong starting point. The sector has to do with capturing people's stories, creating a cause and then trying to find the support to do something important for society. We generate social capital and good for society (and that is) more important than a lot of other sectors that just generate profits."

He was then asked: What is a better term?

His answer: "I think "social profit" is a great way to talk about it. We provide social value to the community."

Maybe it's not just you Larry. I've always heard and studied in Canadian geography class that BC feels closer to the Pacific provinces of the US then they do to the rest of Canada. I also remember reading in a book about Canadian lawyers that resettling in BC was a bit of a problem for an Ontario lawyer because he was not part of the BC legal scene and had not graduated in BC. I think he was eventually accepted but it took quite some time.

                    Hi Zeljko,

I think B.C. and Quebec share in this :).

Well, it is a long way from Toronto or Montreal to B.C. I don't see any reason why they should feel any particular kindred with Ontario - just by confederation... Hell, Toronto is so flat... Anyway, there are - and should be - regional differences not just between countries but people in general. I would prefer to enjoy the contrasts rather than worry about them or try to discover 'the cause'.

With all those info that you made public your "f7 pawn" might be in danger ;)

If you are in Vancouver for CYCC, I will honor the sushi bet I lost to you.

to clarify, there are many individuals in BC who would be perfectly happy to see Larry here, including me. But..... there are people who view Larry as the great Satan and feel he has nothing to offer. You also see the view sometimes on this board or the CFC board that the CMA is some kind of competitive threat. I don't get it myself but there you are. If Larry's standard for setting up shop is that there be some level of consensus, he will be waiting for a while.

Some of the Vancouver folks are touchy. I get blowback occasionally for organizing tournaments there.

Victoria would probably welcome Larry with open arms - I can't think of anybody in Victoria who is anti-Larry/CMA but I guess we are probably too small a market.
