The Calgary International Chess Classic begins tomorrow. GM and IM norms will be up for grabs. 5 GMs and 3 IMs, with a couple of FMs and others will compete for cash prizes and norms.

GM Ivanisevic had to cancel at the last minute, but we were able to save the GM norm possibilities by bringing in GM Anton Kovalyov. The GM norm will be tough, but not impossible. IM norms will be a little easier, but regardless, you will have to play very well to get one of those!

Along with our live broadcast of the top 3 boards, we will be featuring "Game of the Round" by a host of GMs and IMs. Each round will feature analysis of the most interesting game from that round by a number of titled players from around the world. This should add considerably to my daily reports of the event in progress.

Players, pairings and results will be posted on the tournament website. It should be an interesting event. The first round begins Tuesday, May 15 at 7pm Mountain time.

I think it was Norm who was just crowing about how Canada should have something similar to the US Championships coverage that the states has.

It sounds like his prayers have been answered!

                Re: 2012 Calgary International

The first round of the Calgary Internaitonal was played today at Ramada,
downtown Calgary. So far there has only been one upset as NM Rob Gardner was
able to draw GM Victor Mikhalevski. Nevertheless, it looked like more upsets
were in the making as GM Kovalyov seemed to be in some trouble against NM
Richard Wang, while NM Alex Yam was doing really well against GM Alexander
Shabalov. In the end, however, the GMs turned the tables around and managed to
win the games. You can view the games live on the official website.

1 IM Edward Porper (2414) GM Anton Kovalyov (2619)

My predictions are that Mr. GM Anton will win the tournament with a score of 8.5/9.

The games seemed to have stopped being broadcast. The game is "frozen".
                    Disappointing.

Yes. If you read the Daily Reports page, you will get an explanation. The boards went down when some more serious issues had to be dealt with (which they were), look for the broadcast for round 3. I will try to get round 2 going again, but can't guarantee that.

I also received Lawrence Day's first round analysis and will try to get that up shortly.

A crosstable on the webpage would be nice. I don't like the idea of downloading a zip file to get the games, and the crosstale in the pgn looked incorrect.

I see young Richard Wang drew with GM Mikhalevski. That's great but is the pgn correct, and did he miss an easy win on move 36 with Qe8+?

I think some of the games have small glitches. The Miller v Haessel game from round two saw White miss a win of a rook when they agreed to a draw.
