  • last round of the 2012 Toronto Closed

This week sees the last round of the Toronto Closed.

After Roman Sapozhnikov's withdrawal, top-rated Artiom Samsonkin finishes a week early with 5.5/8.

Three other players can finish with 5.5:
    • Victor Plotkin currently has 3.5/6, with games to play against Vlad Birarov and Michael Song.
    • Vlad Birarov currently has 3.5/6, with games to play against Plotkin and Michael Kleinman
    • Michael Song currently has 4.5/7, with a game to play against Plotkin.

    Tie-breaks will be head-to-head, followed by Sonneborn-Berger.
    • If Victor wins both games, he still loses on head-to-head, having lost his game with Artiom.
    • If Vlad wins both games, he wins on head-to-head, having won his game with Artiom.
    • If Michael wins his game, he ties on head-to-head with Artiom, but wins on Sonneborn-Berger.
    • If both Vlad and Michael Song beat Victor, and Vlad beats Michael Kleinman as well, then it looks like Vlad wins on Sonneborn-Berger, if my calculations are correct.

In other words, Vlad Birarov has a mathematical way to win the event, but a tough road ahead; Michael Song has a good shot at it, if he wins his game against Victor; and it would be worth Artiom's while to help Victor prep for his upcoming games :)

Birarov-Plotkin to be played today, Sunday, in advance of the final round Monday night. Each player needs a full point.

      Why did Roman Sapozhnikov withdraw?

"Personal reasons" - which I don't know fully, so I don't have much to say. He wasn't doing well in the tournament, but I believe there were other reasons. It was not a decision that was taken lightly, by him or by our organizational team.

Birarov 0-1 Plotkin on Sunday sets up an exciting final.

Victor Plotkin and Michael Song, the only two players who can match the 5.5/8 record of Artiom Samsonkin, face off in the final round!

Plotkin is the defending Toronto Closed Champion; Song is the youngest player in this year's event. Each player needs a full point to tie with Samsonkin. This is going down to the wire!

Song, undefeated, draws Plotkin. Artiom Samsonkin wins clear first. Three-way tie for second: Plotkin, Song, and Kleinman.

Bindi - I managed a null and void result in our bet, despite how many Michael's you had at your avail and the fact that my only horse dropped out from the tournament :D

                  Until next time...

                    Congratulations!

There were talks that the award ceremony would be held on June 25 during the Toronto Teams Rapid Chess Championship.
