General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
I believe a regulation was passed that the election date is fixed for Oct. 17, 2015 (but that the Govt. can call it earlier, if they so choose). I do not think the government can go beyond this outside date.
Bob A
Hi Bob,
You're probably right about the date.
I'm starting to like Trudeau's chances of forming the next government. The TV attack ads against him shouldn't hurt too much because a lot of us watched him grow up in the public spotlight.
I still don't like the NDP's chances of forming the government. Looking at Alberta and their experiment with the NDP is interesting. While they have only recently won in that province, the NDP is supposed to be the political party for the workers. The big question which comes to mind is why so many working people are losing their jobs in that province since the election.
I was also reading the minimum wage in that province will go to $15. an hour. Having always felt a business which can't afford to pay a employee a decent living wage probably shouldn't be in business, it will be interesting to see how many will choose to continue to operate with that minimum.
I was looking at the financials for one oil sands company yesterday. Oil is just under $60. US a barrel today. The cost of operating currently runs around $50. US a barrel for that company. A very slim margin and dependent on the currency exchange rate. With increased carbon taxes, income taxes and royalty rates it will be interesting to see where the company cuts to get their cost down. Usually the first things to consider is cutting capital expenditures and get rid of salaries.
A problem with the NDP is while they support workers, the climate, etc. etc,, they can't control the ability or willingness of the corporations to pay up.
In any case, people elect the government they can afford and Alberta is a rich province.
Why not save Canadian taxpayers the exorbitant expense of an election and follow the good example in P.E.I. and settle all future elections by a coin flip (:
By the way, Bob, my $20. tells me it's brave and willing to go out into the world if need be..
Do you think the election will be this fall or next spring?
Hi Gary:
I believe a regulation was passed that the election date is fixed for Oct. 17, 2015 (but that the Govt. can call it earlier, if they so choose). I do not think the government can go beyond this outside date.
Need more be said? Start talking to your $ 20 bill now, about moving to my study, Gary!

Hi Bob,
I have no idea who will win the federal election. I'm mostly interested in watching Alberta and their experiment with the NDP. So far the oil and gas sector seems to be voting with their feet.
I know you don't believe in polls, Gary, but they do often have currency. I knew you'd want to know about this one - will stir your commitment to get that $ 20 saved up in advance!!

NDP leads!!! A neck and neck 3-way race now.......StephenJustin is self-destructing!
What do you think Gary? Who is going to form the government, and majority or minority?
Hi Bob,
I don't know but think it will be a Liberal government. Minority government is not on the ballot, something voters should remember.
Elections are often on a riding by riding basis. Lots of people don't simply head to the polls looking to support a particular leader.
In this riding, which has been split in two with redistribution, the incumbent conservative will be facing a popular councilor who is the Liberals choice. Judging by the lawn signs Door to Door mail delivery is an issue. Also, as the Nuclear plant is scheduled to close in 2020, some literature the Conservative incumbent sent Today says he will propose building a "spent nuclear fuel" recycling facility on the site. We'll see how many folks want that in their back yard.
Without knowing the other party platforms on the issues it's hard to guess who will win.
My guess is this riding goes Liberal. But, it's only a guess.
I know you don't believe in polls, Gary, but they do often have currency. I knew you'd want to know about this one - will stir your commitment to get that $ 20 saved up in advance!!

Hi Gary:
Now we could go on and on about the value of polls this far in advance of an election, but I'm sure we've covered that ad nauseam in our prior polls. Our fans of this thread ;) probably need some relief from that. So I'll just post the most recent CROP/Quebec poll:
LPC 33 - down 4 - still twice as high as under Iggy (14%)
NDP 30 - up 3
Bloc 17 - steady over 2 months
CPC 16 - steady over 2 months
The main issues for me are two:
1. If CPC gets very few seats in Quebec, and lose some elsewhere, if they could manage to defy odds and polls, it will likely have to be a minority government - at least that may slow down the damage rate some.
2. If the NDP is to just stay in as the official opposition, they cannot collapse in Quebec as some have predicted they are. But it is NOT an #NDP collapse. However, it is true that the #NDP are down 13 points from Layton in 2011 (43%). Still, if Justin manages to put his foot in his mouth on some Quebec hot-button issue, the NDP will be the one to reap the benefit.
What do you think Gary? Who is going to form the government, and majority or minority?
Bob
P.S. My $ 20 bill on my chess book cabinet in my study tells me the room is a bit cold this year. I tell him maybe your place might be warmer than ours next Oct. It goes into hissy fits every time I try to prepare him for this eventuality.
Stephen Joseph Harper, PC MP (born April 30, 1959) is a Canadian politician who is the 22nd and current Prime Minister of Canada and the Leader of the Conservative Party. Harper became prime minister in 2006, forming a minority government after the 2006 election. He is the first prime minister to come from the newly reconstituted Conservative Party, which formed after a merger of the Progressive Conservative Party and the Canadian Alliance.
The time has come (October 2015) for a change from the current "King of Canada".
For more than 9 years (since Feb. 6, 2006) and 4 elections, Canada keeps voting the "would-be King" back into power. Time for a change? You betcha!
I live in the Federal Riding of Saanich which is represented by the only elected Green Party MP - Elizabeth May!
I sure hope that the rest of Canada wakes up and votes for a candidate who is NOT "conservative". -- that's right -- "ABC" -- anyone but Conservative.
Personally, I wouldn't believe much I read from RT anymore than I'd believe everything I read in the Canadian papers. Maybe I'll have a look sometime and see if you're directing me to some Bolshevik rantings.
RT seems to be oriented to a generic "alternative" approach from the MSM. They have left AND right. It's a strange mixture for those who use a traditional political scorecard. They are state-supported, like the CBC and BBC, and also claim to be independent of advertisers and government. Maybe compare RT to Al-Jazeera; both are pretty good on many international issues, with critical coverage not found in the MSM, but their domestic coverage is much less critical.
Anyway, enjoy your new year.

Today is my 48th wedding anniversary so I can't get into politics other than to tell you I'm most likely to vote for someone who will promise to keep my door to door mail delivery intact. It's really the main issue for me.
This is a busy time of the year, Nigel. Boxing day (which co-incidently is Checkmate's birthday) the crowd comes over and more eating. This year was very nice because I had a 10 year old chess student. Then one day of rest and left overs. Then anniversary and more eating. Two days to recover and it's just in time for New Years Eve and probably visitors on New years day. I suppose my pension cheque will come rolling in somewhere along the line.
January 2nd the diet starts.

No. It likely indicates the person has a tablet and downloaded the free app.
haha. What a clever reply. But, I dunno. Wouldn't they get the app from RT if they wanted information about the new Russian military doctrine rather than from a source that would likely be critical and negative? I mean, doesn't everyone go to original sources first?
That's why I say that someone reading the Nazional Post has probably already made up their mind, politically speaking. But who's to say...
