This tournament had a mixed doubles team prize (one male + one female) to be eligible for the prize. It's an interesting idea to attract more players. It seems to me that other pairings are possible, too. Two examples:

    Over X age prize:

Two players who are paired up and must have a combined age of at least (e.g.) 80. Leads to wunderkinder trying to find seasoned warriors to pair up with.

    Under X age prize:

Two players are paired up must have a combined age no greater than (e.g.) 40. Probably be won by a couple of kids in their late teens/early 20s but some 12 year-old teamed up with a 2400+ 25 year-old would have a shot.

Commit by round 4 (of a 7-round event). Instead of speed dating, it's speed rating.

There have (rarely) been father&son, husband&wife, mother&son, father&daughter etc events, but I don't recall one based on the marketplace like the one Tom links to. Worth further experimentation here, NOB.

I welcome any opportunity for me to be partnered with a member of the opposite sex in a chess environment.
