Ok, but what if it's a Gus Hansen, who has a reputation of playing any two cards? Are you going to put him all in every time you think he's playing a hand like 10,5? If he calls, he's got you beat and you've at least doubled him up.

Let's say he backed me for a month of tournaments and I got lucky and we won $500,000 of which he would be entitled to at least 80%. So, what use is an extra $400,000 to a man who makes millions every year?
Dan Smith I know nothing about. But generally pro poker is a spotty way to make a living, especially for a tournament specialist who doesn't like the grind of daily cash games. There are a lot of major names that do bankroll other players (obviously not just any players, but ones they think have some talent). What they are doing is trying to smooth out the ups and downs of tournament play. That $400,000 in your example might come at a time when Dan Smith himself is in a drought.

But maybe Dan is a cash game grinder and earns a steady income in the Vegas card rooms, in which case you're right and it isn't as worthwhile (or worthwhile at all) for him to get into backing other players.

Questions like "what is your favorite hand" to a poker player are like "how many moves ahead can you see" to a chess player.

I'm sure many would consider him among the favorites to finish on top, seeing how he was the top money winner on the planet last year with just shy of $5 million in tournament winnings!
It would appear that Dan has now earned more than ten million dollars from poker. His Wikipedia entry lists him with more than 8.8 million in tournament winnings as of August, 2014.

Assuming he won at least $200,000 in the last 4 months of 2014, he's already earned more than a million this year (:

Just to update, Dan finished 3rd in the $1M buyin WSOP tournament last night on TSN, earning a cool $4M for his efforts. His career cashes in tournaments now sits at over $25M. http://pokerdb.thehendonmob.com/player.php?a=r&n=133383

Jeff Sarwer survived until Day 2 of the 2018 "Main Event" - no prize money. I didn't recognize any of the 50 or so Canadian prize winners as being tournament chess players.

I'm surprised you haven't mentioned that the name Tony Miles is now special in both chess and poker and they are two different people. Tony Miles just finished 2nd in the 2018 Main Event. Don't know if he plays chess at all.
