  • Chess players at WSOP

Browsing through some of the entry lists for the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas (it runs for about a month until early July; 1 or 2 events start up daily), I saw the name of David Ottosen in "Event #21 - No Limit Hold'em" - $1000 buy-in.

Unless I'm mistaken, he was not one of the 297 players (out of the original 2799) who made it into the money.

Jeff Sarwer plans to show up in the next week or so.

And in a reverse situation, Alan Cunningham is registered for the National Open.

Allen Cunningham had a prop bet with Howard Lederer that he could get a 2100 rating within a year, but that was two or three years ago. Lederer had a peak USCF rating of 2150 before he got big in poker.

Looks like Cunningham lost the bet...

As a side note, I have heard a number of poker players say that Howard Lederer was once a State Chess Champion, although I don't recall hearing Lederer say it himself.

As far as I can find, Lederer only lived in two states while he was an active poker player: New Hampshire and New York. I cannot find his name on either list of past state champions... not that I really had to look on the New York listing. I can't imagine that anyone with a U2200 rating has ever won the NY State Chess Championships.

Something tells me that Hugh Brodie is going to prove me wrong, or at least spend countless minutes trying :)

My apologies for spelling Allen incorrectly. I saw Ylon Schwartz visiting Allen between rounds at the National Open a few years back, probably 2010.

Lederer hasn't played in a chess tournament since 1986 - his US rating is 1951.

A few links regarding his chess career:

I'm probably playing 53, 54 and 56 when I'm down there (barring schedule difficulties due to them leading into eachother).

Dropping $4000 is still no petty cash.

Already 42 advance entries in the $1 million buy-in - including Jonathan Duhamel and Guy Laliberté.

Oh...that looks cool. It's really too bad that I have to do a simul at the CYCC or I'd probably go play those events and #57 too...

I just got back (played events 18 and 21 with no success). Trying to talk myself out of going back for the main event.

It's safe to say the Cunningham-Lederer bet will never be resolved as Lederer is in hiding outside the US.

I'd be shocked if Lederer (or Ferguson for that matter) ever showed up to the WSOP again. They'd probably be shot.

Ouch... Priorities! 57 tends to have one of the most stacked fields in the world for a NLH event anyways.
