Agreed...and not just GMs, but titled players in general. There are only 16... For the tournament that it is, i find this unbelievable.

Comparing the Quebec Open to the Canadian Open shows the Canadian Open being treated like a tourist spot for families to register their kids, and the top section being overlooked. Meanwhile the Quebec Open pre-registered list is one of the strongest I have ever seen.

The Canadian Open as Norm said, is comparable to a weekender, except for 100x the cost and 6 days of sun. As I recall, there were more GMs on the list but they have now dissapeared, and I can't blame them.

I almost made an IM norm in the 2010 Canadian Open thanks to the tremendous result the registrations pulled in, providing formidable opponents. In this tournament its basically impossible. Maybe nobody else finds it as dissapointing as I do, but this seems unacceptable for the top section of the Canadian Chess Championship, especially when you take a look at any of the years previous.

Hey Aman: Why not turn that frown upside down?

Here is an idea for you. There have been 49 Canadian Opens - some stronger than others. Which was the strongest? Who knows - but as they say "smell isn't everything" :)

Anyway -- the 50th edition of the Canadian Open is set for 2013.

No bids to date. Where should this event be held? Do you think that the scheduling of the 2012 Toronto International on the very next day following this year's CO has had and impact on the attendance. Victoria will have approx 140 players and Toronto the other 100 + (too bad about the lack of support).

So -- moving forward to 2013 what do you propose? How will we (the CFC) get rid of your disappointment and have the "perfect" Canadian Open?

Maybe the event should be in Montreal (the home of the first Canadian Open). We could also celebrate the new FQE-CFC agreement after it is approved by the Governors! :) It was in Toronto for 2 years in a row and many found that fact very disappointing. So now it is time for the CFC to consider bids (anyone? anywhere?) for next year's CO event. Please come up with a constructive proposal for the 50th Anniversary of the Canadian Open!

How about a $50 Grand Prize Fund for the 50th edition.

Start brainstorming and put your negative energies to work to come up with a good plan for next year!

How about the Aman Hambleton Golden Jubilee 50 Grand for 50 GM Canadian Open?

There is (at least) one bid for the 2013 Canadian Open. It will be discussed and (may be) voted on at the CFC AGM (in progress (online) right now).

What city is bidding? I hope it is Ottawa. From what I've heard from other chess players, the 2007 Canadian Open was one of the best Canadian Opens ever held.

I hope if you (or anyone) posts such crosstables with results, that time is taken to format them so they are readable. As a list, that is ok, but when there are imbedded results it is completely worthless.

Right you are Kerry -- all of the Crosstables, Standings, etc. will be properly put up on the official website of the event.

This was just a quick list of the 135 I just entered all the registrations so far.

Please follow the daily results at this link:

I didn't do too well in that tournament, but I did order from Pizza Pizza a lot. Like three times. It was pretty sweet.

A chance to play with her? She should have been a marquee player... I would have bid :)

-- after defeating 2 Masters (Arthur Calugar and former BC Champion Harry Moore)? Great performance so far!
