General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
15. Have fun!

Canadian Post-Secondary Chess Championships-Fees Increase on Dec. 1
Hi,
The Canadian Post-Secondary Chess Championships are to be held at Queen's University in Kingston, ON, January 16-18, 2009. Full details are attached in the flyer below.
The fees go up by $20 across the board on Dec. 1, and the hotel deal we have made is only good until Dec. 15, so register early to save the money and the hassle.
Please contact me with any questions.

Re: Canadian Post-Secondary Chess Championships-Fees Increase on Dec. 1
Hello again,
It has come to my attention that the tournament notice has neglected to mention the need for teams to bring sets and clocks (if available)
There will only be a handful of extras on hand, so please bring sets and clocks for your team to the tournament. I will remind all teams that register of this requirement.

University of Toronto will be sending 4 (!) teams this time, since we can field two of them in each section (above and below 1750).
Last year in Guelph our A team took 1st place in the top section, and our B and C teams proved very competitive in the U1750 section. It seems that this year CUCC will be even more competitive, and we can't wait for January.
We have very good intentions to defend our title, even though it'll be tough, and we challenge all universities out there!
In the U1750, I can honestly say we expect to clean house, not to be too immodest :-)
Here are our players in rating order:
(note that teams and board order may be subject to change in some cases)
FM Bindi Cheng 2369
Geordie Derraugh 2087
Evan Sonkin 1966
Alex Ferreira 1960
Lu Zhou 1898
Leon Perelman 1876
Robert Roller 1869
Robert Kleinman 1782
Benjamin Davidson 1728
Bill Kim 1700
Stuart Brammall 1682
Jacob Stein 1649
Alex Safir 1564
Kevin Chen UNR
Siang Choon Khor UNR
Darko Vukojicic UNR
We thank Tyler Longo, Alex Lambruschini and Frank Dixon for organizing this event, we're looking forward to it.

Re: Canadian Post-Secondary Chess Championships-Fees Increase on Dec. 1
Thanks Alex,
I'm going to post a complete pre-registered list in a few days, but at the moment there are 10 teams registered with another 6 confirmed (but no registration yet).
At the moment include both FM Bindi Cheng(2369) and FM Christian Stevens(2396), and I am expecting some more strong players by the end of the week.
Please, help get the word out to schools who may not have sent teams before. The organizers would like this Post-Secondary Championship to be a truly national championship, with as many new faces as possible. Again, schools outside Ontario and Quebec get FREE entry, and schools who have not sent a team since 2004 get discounted entry.

Re: Canadian Post-Secondary Chess Championships-Fees Increase on Dec. 1
Hi again,
On another note. Is anyone read this fluent in French? I have been having trouble translating the CUCC flyer so that I can advertise it on the French board as well as with the FQE (our tournament is FQE rated as well). If anyone could help me out I would really appreciate it.

Re: Canadian Post-Secondary Chess Championships-Fees Increase on Dec. 1
Hi Ben,
Of course you have a valid point. I realize the costs could be somewhat high for a weekend tournament. There isn't much else we can do other than completely waive the cost for schools outside the area.
On the other hand, the more teams that come from other regions, the more encouraging it could be for others if the championships become truly national. Dalhousie is a regular attendee of this event (for the last 2 years when it was in Ontario).
