After 7 rounds, super GM Wesley So is running solo third at 5.5 / 7 and is undefeated. Yesterday, Wesley scored 2 wins over 2 GMs to overcome a slow start of only 1 win and 3 draws. In the last three rounds, GM So scored 3 wins over 3 GMs.
Last night, his win over another super GM from Belarus Ivan Kolev 2604 showed exactness in calculation under time pressure in grabbing 3 pawns in a R + N + P endgame. His Rf3 simply put off the drawing possibilities for Black. It was a nail biting game when Wesley's time dwindled to a little more than 1 minutes, still a few moves before the time control (40 moves) while Kolev still has more than 5 minutes.
The leaders are GM Ivan Sokoloff and GM Shabalov with 6 / 7. Looks like GM Sokoloff is taking another bye.
