        Hi James,

We plan to provide jugs of ice water and cups, but not bottles.

          Hi all,

80+ people registered now, looking like we may break 150 at this rate
Apart from a strange gap of nearly 300 points at master level, it's a good competitive spread of players. Where are all the masters hiding?

                Hi James,

There are some pubs on college that are very decent, just South of Hart House about 7-8 mins walk. There are also some fast food type places such as shawarma / pitas and subway.
Chinatown is just a bit SouthWest of those.
There are a couple of pizza and sandwiches places on Harbord & Spadina intersection.
The Annex is just a bit Northwest of those. All types of selection there.
There are also a couple of pubs on Bloor, just a bit North of Hart House.
To the East there's Yonge Street. Much like the Annex, sky is the limit in terms of options.
There's a Hero Burger & an Ali Baba's pita places on Bay & Wellesley area, before hitting Yonge.

In sum... no shortage of options in pretty much every direction. The only 'problem' is that they're all about 7-15 minutes away by foot.

As always, if there are any high school students looking for volunteer hours, please contact us.

Tasks will include carrying and setting up boards & clocks, distributing scoresheets, setting up display board, etc.

                  Thanks!

Re: Toronto Labour Day at Hart House

                    Alright!!

Hart House milestone (in recent years years at least), 150 players pre-registered.
Early registrations will close tonight midnight. At some point before tomorrow noon I'll update all ratings and CFC membership status (in case people have played since they've pre-registered). Playing sections will also be split on the list.

Note that late entries have a $20 surcharge, at the door. $10 if you e-mail us by tomorrow (Friday).

On Saturday we'll be playing upstairs, Music & Debates Rooms.
Sunday & Monday however, we'll play in the Great Hall -- Hurrah!
On Saturday there's a wedding in the Great Hall which had been booked before we even considered running the Labour Day.

We'll have to be strict with people arriving late to complete their registration. People arriving after 9:30am may not be paired Round 1, or paired manually immediately after the round start without getting a proper swiss pairing. The reason for this is that we expect a significantly higher number of people and we want to start the tournament on time or as close to it as possible.

                    See you all on Saturday,

                    Alex Ferreira

Question: I have a DGT North American chess clock. How do I set it for the U1600 time control (30 moves in 90 min, 60 min added after move 30) The DGT manual gets confusing with its references to 'guillotine", "bonus(Fischer)" and "delay".

I have a DGT 2010 Clock and I also have no idea how to do this.

Re: Toronto Labour Day at Hart House

Why are there different time controls for different sections? Why not increments for the lower sections? Lack of digital clocks?

Seems like more work for the arbiters (and more abuse to the clocks) by using non-incremental time controls.

                              Hi Hugh,

We don't have enough clocks to provide full equipment to everyone, and we can't ask players to bring a specific type of clocks, analog or digital. The U1900 & U1600 Sections can be played with either type of clock. The Open & U2200 Sections can only be played with digital clocks. At the same time... FIDE requires the number of moves for a primary time control to be 40 moves, if there are to be two controls per game. We only have 5 hours slotted for each game, and 2 hours for 40 moves and 1 hour SD (old school time control) can make a game go for 6 hours. Having a half hour SD as a secondary time was also an option we didn't like. Furthermore, increments are awesome, the way of the future. The two time controls we have were the best combination we could come up with so that everyone's game lasts approximately 5 hours if it goes the full length, while dealing with the clocks' limitations.
