  • Cafe Pi

    Hi:

How often do people play chess at Cafe Pi. If I were to stop by on a random day at the Cafe would I be able to find a game?

I am mainly looking for blitz.

Who are the players in this video? Or their strength?

In the video, it's probably Charles Filion on the right (blitz rated around 2300). I can't tell who's on the left, but probably a player rated around 1700-1800.

The Cafe is open daily from 10 am to midnight, and there are always chess players there of all strengths- most playing blitz. There are usually more players there in the evening (10 tables or more - and often 4 or 5 players playing "winner keeps the seat" at a table). And it's air conditioned!

(poker starts around 7 - usually a $10 buy-in followed by a cash game until closing)

      Thank you Hugh.

Do they by any chance play to hustle? $5-$10 a game? I always play better when there is money on the line.

I hope I won't get distraught looks if I walk in the café and ask the players if they are interested in playing for $5/10 for a game.

You will find players who are willing to play from $1/game and up (rarely - if ever - over $20) - with or without odds (time and/or money). However - few will play for money with "strangers" they have never seen before. Also - some are noted for not paying up after their losses, or will try to run a "tab" with you. There has been more than one occurrence of a player being asked to "step outside" and being escorted to the nearest ATM (the Cafe now has one). Best idea is to insist on payment after every game.

          Thank you Hugh.

I'll be sure to stop by once I'm in town. I should be there near the end of September.

I'll play you 5$ or 10$ or even more depending on your risk aversion .

              Hi Norm,

I actually went to the Cafe Pi today after seeing your post. It was a nice warm up for me after not moving a chess piece in months.

It was nice and pleasant. The only thing I'd advise you if you are looking to play for money is to not be so up-front about it as you might get some not so nice looks from the players.

All in all a fun experience, but the best casual chess place I've ever been to is definitely at Dupont Circle in Washington D.C.

You were playing Elshad Hajiyev - a player in the 2100 range. If you had stuck around, you would have seen him win his $10 back and more - giving 3 minutes to 45 seconds to Dragon Milunovic at $2/game with contras (like the doubling cube in backgammon). Most games were for $4 or $8. Many insulting remarks going back and forth (not quiet games like yours). :-)

Hmmm...maybe he could pay back CMA the $300 he owes us from a bounced cheque a few years back....I am dreaming in colour this morning :)

I cannot tell from the context who (of several named) bounced the cheque - perhaps that is worth clarification?

Thank you Mr.Elias for the recommendations.

Mr.Kelly: I believe Larry is referring to Elshad Hajiyev?

Larry - you have to go to Cafe Pi and catch Elshad on one of those days when he has just (allegedly) come back from the Casino with a pocketfull of money.

                          Hi Hugh,

Every time I bump into him he tells me he is going to pay....in my books he is simply a person to avoid.

I've long lamented the fact that Toronto doesn't have its own Cafe Pi. Now it seems that Moscow is endeavouring to create an entire city of Cafe Pi's. Almost makes me want to be a Muscovite.

                              Hi Hugh,

Is Cafe Pi still active these days? How is it on a Friday/Saturday evening (particularly this upcoming weekend)? Any players who like to play for money? I remember the last time I was there Elshad Hajiyev was keen on playing for money.
