  • Superfest rating?

Larry's Superfest tournament has had the top section CFC rated. What about the other sections? The CFC-FQE entente is in place - shouldn't the other sections be CFC-rated as well? Shouldn't all Quebec tournaments from Aug. 1 onward be rated by both systems (until a rating compromise is decided upon)?

None of the sections (as yet) appear to have been FQE-rated.

They certainly *could* be of course... but that would require the organizer to pay rating fees to both organizations. The deal doesn't require them to be dual-rated (except in the case of wanting to FIDE-rate an event or section, it must be CFC rated as well).

What you describe may perhaps be the starting-point for the next level of discussions, if it goes there.

Does this mean your average Quebec tournament will not be CFC rated? Suppose there are Olympiad spots on the line - how will Quebec players be treated as far as ratings go?

      From the entente:

"FQE members would be considered for inclusion on Canadian National Teams on the same basis as CFC members."

What if there are large differences between FQE and CFC ratings?

The day we use CFC or FQE ratings as support for inclusion on a national team is going to be a sad day for Canadian chess. They are both completely useless ratings, focus on FIDE.

It is up to the organizer to decide. The rating information should always be included in the ad. For instance:

The Montreal Open held on September 7-9 has section A (2000 and over) and section B (-2000) rated FIDE-CFC-FQE. Sections C (-1600) and D (-1200) are rated FQE.

The Varennes Open held on November 16-18 is rated FQE (all 3 sections: Open, -1800 and -1500).

The Santa Claus Open held on December 26-30 has its open section rated FIDE-CFC-FQE. The other two sections (-1800) and (-1500) are rated FQE.

The FQE is well on its way to kill his own rating system. In fact it is even in front of the CFC in that endeavour. To rate an under 2000 section CFC and FIDE is simply thoughtless. Who pays for these multiple ratings for which very few people care ? The players.
