Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
I'd be surprised if you could expand C by formatting D and E... at least I've never been able to do it on any version of Windows up to and including XP. From what I've experienced, once the partitions are set, you can't reconfigure them in any way without reformatting the drive(s). Based in how large your hard drive is, I'd say that will take a good couple of hours of work to accomplish.
As for Windows Vista vs. 7, I'm still getting used to 7, and I've never owned a Vista machine. I've used Vista in a few places, and my mother has one, so I have some experience. 7 is definitely better in terms of services and options offered, and transparency.

No matter how big and bad you are, when a two-year-old hands you a toy phone, you answer it.
However, I wouldn't bother with that. Two things come to mind - 48GB is way too much stuff on the boot drive, perhaps you could relocate some of it - a free option!
Secondly... for the same $70 that Partition Magic costs, you can easily afford (after-tax!) a 60 GB OCZ Vertex3 SSD. Install windows on that and make it your boot drive, system speed will dramatically increase, and it'll free up what is currently your C partition to use for other tasks.
I highly recommend Option #2 if you want to spend any money...

Is Windows 7 somehow better than Vista?
If you compare various performance-related metrics, Windows 7 beats Vista hands down. There are a lot of other things that 7 does better, one of the important ones being the way it handles multithreaded applications and uses multiple cores.
I have used the utilities on a Universal Boot Disk to do the same thing in the past. There is really no need to pay for such utilities anymore. The free stuff works quite well. The tricky part is finding it. The universal boot disk was a linux boot disk and used an earlier version of the QTParted software that can be found at the following link:
Windows 7 can be more stable than Vista but I haven't had problems with either. I am typing this on a Vista laptop... where I replaced the HD with a 128 GByte SSD. I move my data files onto an external usb HD on a regular basis.

I've moved all the data/programs I can, deleted non-useful files and am now down to uninstalling useful programs which is why I'm feeling desperate. I bought the computer + Vista in China and have noticed that the fonts folder is jammed full of very large chinese language fonts. But when I go to fonts via Control Panel I cannot delete them. I'm out of ideas for what to delete/move.
Anyway thanks for the tips Chris and everyone who had suggestions.

Hi Chris
Would you have any ideas for free software that can clean off crap files that are sitting on a hard drive. I have managed to make my C drive much bigger by comining the C and D drives into one but my initial problem remains.
I have deleted unnecessary files already, used file compression, unindexed; used the included 'disk cleanup' option and done what I think are all reasonable options. However, I think there are still tons of unwanted temp files (and other unwanted files) hiding somewhere...
