General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Men: Colombia. This may be a dangerous team to play. No GMs and ranked #59; their board one is on pace for a GM norm with a performance rating well over 2600. If Canada wins the match, it could mean a place in the top 30.
The 11th and final round starts Tuesday at 10 am German time; That's 1 am Pacific Time or 4 am EST.
Colombia beat Czech Republic, so is no pushover.
In 1982, Canada also played Scotland and Colombia.... The biggest difference in the Olympiads since then is that three countries (CS, SU, YU) from 1982 became 23 countries in 2008. In 1982, we played one of them. In 2008, we didn't play any!
One interesting observation Judit Polgar lost her last three including against Columbia. So it will be a very challenging match especially boards one and two.
Good luck to both Canadian teams.

Way back in 1990, the one and only year I was a member of the Olympiad team (albeit on board six) we played Colombia in round 11. We played our top four players and they still beat us 4-0. A lot has changed since then but, please, let us not have a repeat of that. "Vengence!" he cried.

Maybe my board 1 win against Columbia in the Correspondence PanAmerican Team event the last time I played the event wasn't such a bad result.
Neither knows how to spell Colombia, the country in South America.
That wasn't even a typo.
How about we get picky and analyse this. I checked the ICCF rating list on the web server and they spell the country name with the "U". Columbia. I would assume the delegate for the country would point out the spelling error, if in fact there is one. While we generally accept the spelling you have highlighted, is it possible the residents of the country prefer the spelling I'm using?
One other point, appearantly, the name of the country comes from Christopher Columbus. The normal spelling you are using is from the Italian spelling of the name Columbus. Of course, the Spanish spelling is also different than either of the other two spellings.
On the other hand, FIDE uses the same spelling you do.
I'm thinking back and can not remember how I addressed the letters I sent to that country over the years, if I sent any there. That's what I call a Seniors Moment.
Check out the postage stamps from that country - Colombia.
That's a wonderful idea. I don't know why I didn't think of it.
I bet you didn't know that I save the world. Yes I do! I have stamps from all over the world which I have collected over about 50 years of correspondence chess. Many still on paper. I had intended to soak them off the paper but it didn't get done and many now reside in a couple of boxes.
There was a player in Russia during the cold war. Can't recall the year. We used to exchange stamps with the glue still on them. It was an ideal situation because the postal system with the USSR was slow. A game took years. Of course, my Russian opponents all wrote English.
Some of the envelopes with stamps were quite thick. Sometimes they would turn up with the top of the envelope slit open. A sticker across the top would say it was found damaged in the mail. Nothing was ever missing.
I used to have to find stamps from other countries to fill out an even trade because Canada did not produce enough stamps. The USSR seemed to turn one out for every day of the year.
With some players I would exchange picture postcards and put on a nice stamp. When the game was over a few players would continue to play on. Is was then customary to use a plain postcard and put a small tear in the corner of the stamp to indicate to the opponent it was time to resign the game.

Ex PM Trudeau said that in "la Belle Province" we speak "lousy French" (français minable).
There was some truth to it :( ... but still, we speak better French than most English speaking Canadian.

M. Trudeau used to speak lousy English. He said one thing before an election and did something else after he won. For example, no wage and price controls.
My French is not very good. I don't have an ear for languages.
