Do we have chess tournaments specifically for team ( 4 players each ) ? Don't seem to see them around ....

    mostly individual tournaments .....

it would be great to see team tournaments ( just like the olympiad ) as it encurage tactical and greater team work.....

      Re: Chess tournament - Team

      Hi Gary,

There are very few team tournaments around. In other parts of the world, namely Europe, league / teams competitions are very healthy, and in some places more common than individual weekend type tournaments. I think the reason why they're a lot less popular here is geographic distance. A big city in Canada has 2 or 3 chess clubs. A big city in Europe has 20 or 30. The next city in Europe is 10 kms away. Here is 100 kms (if we're lucky). The tradition to play in a league with teams, where the competition lasts several months (playing a game a week or a game per month) seems to have disappeared, and one-day events occasionally take place.
There is a bughouse / doubleschess tournament at the Annex on November 12th! Although it's in two-people teams.
At post-secondary level, the Pan-American Intercollegiate (usually held in the USA) as well as the Canadian Post-Secondary championships are 3-day long tournaments played in a 4-people team format. Again, these are only partly reflective of their names because of geographic and financial challenges for the tournaments to have full representation.
The tournaments Egis mentions above seem to have been popular, one-day events. Maybe we can do more!

        Hi Alex,

I would think team tournaments would generate more interest and buzz !!!

with that comes more sponsorship from corporations/individuals/govt....

the tournament should be held over a long weekend and not just a day tournament like Kitchener.....

I would think there would be many who are interested to join.....

hold it in hart house or kitchener....that would be great.....

tournament organizers...what do you think ?

it could have a few sections say two sections - open and U-2000....
