6/8 and half a point off the leaders. I'm having time management issues but today I avoided it and won quite easily. I think I'll need 2/3 or 2.5/3 to get into the tiebreaks for a WC spot. I have two blacks left, and am finally due a higher-rated opponent. I've been out of form and have had opening problems but the most important part is I'm still in contention.

The food is good here but the tournament itself has an atmosphere a bit too serious for my taste. Not much fun stuff to do other than the casino. At least I got a couple players to go watch Dredd with me and we all enjoyed it.

4 players have to win their remaining games to shut you out and they can't do it. You've got chances.

How do your tiebreaks look right now? Most of your opponents seem to have done well other than your rd 1 opponent who is sitting on 3/8.

                    Great stuff Eric!

I tried to watch your game yesterday but there seemed to be transmission problems. Later on Chess Resuts I saw that you held with Black. Looks like you are still in the hunt!

What an amazing finish too. h6+ was cute with the mating idea. I am watching intensely from the Chicago airport!

What an important win too, he now has 7.5/10 and two leaders have 8/10. With a win tomorrow I'm sure he could clinch a WC spot but it all depends how the standings and tiebreaks play out. At least he's put himself in a position to do it!

                        GOOD LUCK TOMORROW VAMANOS

World cup spots are sorted out by playoff games in the case of a tie which is good considering my inferior tiebreaks. Prizes are shared equally. So, I probably need to win tomorrow in order to make the playoff. A draw is very unlikely to tie for top 4.

Remember your opponent needs to win tomorrow as well. Keep that in mind. You might not have to be very ambitious to win if it is your opponent being ambitious and you can capitalize on his over-ambition.

These scenarios have happened to me a lot in my squash-playing days.

Oops missed it in the rules:

(2 players tied, 2 games at G/15 + 10 seconds. If they remain tied, 2 more games at G/5 +3 seconds, and if still tied, an Armageddon 5 min vs 4 min (+3 seconds) game with black having draw odds. 3 or more players tied, round robin at G/15 + 10 sec, though if this round robin remains tied, they use the main tournament tiebreaks, which is currently quite bad for Eric).

Eric's opponent tomorrow is a pretty died in the wool 1.e4 player, a 31 year old Argentine GM who has had a pretty stable upper 2500s rating for several years.

According to the ~200 white games I have of him on file (in my pretty limited database), he scores worst against the French and Kan/Taimanov Sicilians (he scores against both in the 55% range). Eric would be wise to avoid the dragon/najdorf setups (scoring in the 80% range). The line he scores far and away the poorest against is:

                              1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bg5 dxe4 5.Nxe4 Nbd7 6.Nf3 h6 7.Nxf6 Nxf6 8. Bh4 c5.

                              Good luck tomorrow Eric!

Is anyone else having bad luck with the official site? The transmission tends to stop after a dozen moves or so.
