Kenny Solomon is South Africa's first ever GM elect and his story is a fascinating read. It certainly sounds like South Africa and Canada share some of the same chess problems.

....and they have a dozen official languages to worry about. :-)

Interesting article, given that I recently returned from a 3 week trip to SA. Fascinating, scenic country. I was a bit concerned about 'security' issues prior to our trip, but did not encounter any incidents. We were advised to avoid downtown Johannesburg (but did go on an interesting and eye-opening guided tour of Soweto), but safely walked the streets of Cape Town. Would have liked to check out the chess scene but couldn't fit it into our busy schedule! There are 11 official languages - English, Afrikaans and 9 African languages, but English seems predominant (probably the common language of all the racial/cultural groups) along with Afrikaans in some of the smaller towns and Zulu in kwaZulu-Natal province.

Kenny is now indeed South Africa's first ever GM.
