  • Fischer - Ivkov

In a game between Fischer and Ivkov, Fischer played 13. Qb1. I hope someone can explain to me why someone would play 13.Qb1. It just doesn't seem to make much positional sense.

    Thanks.

Ooops. I just realized that white needs an extra protector for his e-pawn after an exchange in the center, black will have a lot of pressure on e4. I should have looked a little longer. :o

      Re: Fischer - Ivkov

Well, with 13.Qb1, Fischer prepares the queen-bishop battery which he sets up in the next few moves, on the b1-h7 diagonal, and he also reinforces his planned pawn advances on the queenside, with a2-a3 and b2-b4, which also follow shortly. It seems like a perfect move to connect the opening phase of the game, which is essentially done here after move 12, with the middlegame, which is just starting. This aspect, the successful transition from the opening to the middlegame, is one which Alekhine, among others, identified as the one of the most challenging aspects of chess.:)

Perhaps Fischer was just following theory ;-)
