General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
If Spraggett (in my opinion one of the best chess writers on the net) has to resort to pornographic content to attract readers to his blog, where does that leave the rest of us?

As I understand chess blogging is not very profitable.
TWIC - 10 (?) in business, and recently a guy complained that it did not bring him big monies.
All more or less connected with persons' or organizations' other activities:
Susan Polgar - news re-repost. Setup properly Google News search and you'll get similar results.
ChessCafe - (Larry will be ban me) Many good chess authors promotes its books' business.
chessvibe - also started to publish an opening newspaper.
chessninja - Mig's help to promote the Kasparov's agenda. Did he bankrupt recently? no more updates.
crestbook - Shipov's and his buddies hobby.
ChessCafe does a good job.
We sell to product to them and they sell product to us..a win win situation ...but we hope Chess Talkers will buy from us :) www.strategygames.ca If you see a better price at their site or elsewhere...contact me and I will see what we can do...if we can do better ...then we will :)
Don't forget, when you buy from us, you contribute to the sponsorship of event such as the 2012 Canadian Junior...

Note that NIC and these top news sites are not just blogs. Alot of work.
Yip has a column of links which I assume were a free trade to increase traffic, you link mine on your blog. But why not sell links? Such as for mind games mental development software.
I think Strategy Games could make money by having links and mentions on the blogs of top Canadian chess players. Strategy Games charges teachers to advertise on cma, I think Larry should consider paying to advertise on blogs. At the very least, he would probably be open to giving the blogger a discount on their own items bought from Strategy Games.
If a blog is inviting chess players to Budapest (or some other city), recommend a hotel and get a kickback from the hotel, like $5 a person (This is what online travel agents do). Has anybody set up a billeting exchange where if I play chess in your city I can sleep on your couch, and visiting my town you can sleep on my couch?
There's all kinds of free talk about chess online, but to be a business you need to have a product(s) and market it. A customer base of 2,000 CFC tournament players is very small. Yet there are over 100,000 kids learning chess in Canadian schools. Parents are paying for lessons to develop minds. I would try to tap that larger market.
My blog is in its infant stage of growth as I don't really know what I'm doing. The left links are to what I think are interesting sites or ones that provide useful tools.
I usually try to make posts with some kind of graphic element or do something to add some interest at a more personal level like a bit of bio info.
I study the pageview stats regularly to make an educated guess as to what is going to be popular, who my market is and what they want.
Next few blogs will be
-Panama Open featuring Hansen/Hambleton
-London Open
-Sunday I have a team match
-then I pick up on what gets posted on chesstalk for hints
Now I'm waiting patiently for tuesday's TWIC so I can get the jump on the latest news.(Its 2:50am here) but now its hard to sleep.
For the next few months I'm going to try to build up traffic and keep the quality of the posts consistent.
The blog was really born as I got tired of waiting for the kind of news that I wanted to read regularly. I don't find 2700 level chess that interesting or relevant to me. Not to mention even is it is interesing I don't really understand it.
Local news is more interesting to me or at least players that I might have some connection with.
I'm waiting to see what the CFC will be offering for their website content and the mythical $25,000 or so that is planned to be spent on it.
