  • Hottest rating improvement streak in Canadian history?

IM elect Aman Hambleton (and soon to be GM) has the hottest streak going that I have ever seen. I mean literally the Man is on fire like rocket fire. Since the World Junior in August, in less than 4 months he has gained 200+ FIDE points!!!! (do you know how hard that is to do??), accumulated at least 4 IM norms (and secured the IM title) and has one GM norm and awful close to another. I can think of another Canadian chessplayer ever having a remotely comparable streak. Congratulations Aman!! I am looking forward to seeing your annotated games on your website.

Aman's streak is indeed very impressive! :)

Another player who had an amazing year is IM Raja Panjwani, in 2000, when I was coaching him, soon after his arrival in Kingston. Raja began that year at a rating of 1210, and improved to just under 1900 by December. :) Of course, it is easier to improve at lower rating levels.

With all due repect to Raja, whose performance was amazing, I am not referring to CFC rating gains. We all know several players who have had multi hundred point rating gains under the CFC rating system. However FIDE is a completely different story. Rating gains of over 100 rating points FIDE (even over a one year period) are extremely rare at the master level.

Aman's performance is impressive - in a such short time he achieved a lot.

There was a player named Zuk, back in the 70s maybe? Gordon Taylor wrote an article on him for En Passant back in the mid-90s when I was with the CFC.
