  • Canadian Junior Starts today!

Good morning everyone! Hope you all had a great Xmas and that Santa had you in his good books :).

So we are set to start at 10 am today.

I picked up Richard Wang and his dad at the airport last night (Anyone who has been to the Canadian Chess Challenge knows that I love being the chauffeur at these events LOL). The tidbit from our chat that I will share with you is that Richard was born in...Sudbury Ontario, although he has spent most of his life in Edmonton.

Francis Rodrigues, Gary Rodrigues, Yuri Mamshev and I set up the playing hall yesterday. Francis was directing the troops...when I leave the Chess<n Math Association I hope some one like him takes over...he is awesome!

This is our first time using the Monroi system so we ask you for your patience. Our office is across the street from the playing site so we will keep you up to speed here at Chesstalk.

    Thanks for dropping by :)

Games working OK for me, after I found the tournament on the Chess Tournaments Live page.

            Hi John,

I am being told that it doesn't work consistantly with Explorer but if you use a different browser it should be fine. It is working fine for us with Chrome.

Thanks, Larry, it is working with Firefox. I don't want to know why Monroi can't make their system work with the most popular browser.

I'm using Google Chrome. I just tried IE and no work.

Razvan Preotu played 5. Qe2, Wormald Attack in the Ruy Lopez. Monroi incorrectly shows an American flag next to his name.

Andrei Botez was the only brave soul to predict results for the first round. Here is what he predicted:

                        My prevision for round 1:

Qin Zi Yi (joey) 0-1 Wang Richard
                        Song Michael .5-.5 Kleinman Michael
                        Preotu Razvan 1-0 Szalay Karoly
                        Sapozhnikov Roman .5-.5 Kraiouchkine Nikita
Jiang Louie 1-0 Chiku-Ratte Olivier Kenta

                        and the results were:

Qin Zi Yi (joey) .5-.5 Wang Richard ....Andrei 0
Song Michael 0-1 Kleinman Michael ....Andrei 0
Preotu Razvan .5-.5 Szalay Karoly ....Andrei 0
Sapozhnikov Roman Still playing Kraiouchkine Nikita ....Andrei 1
Jiang Louie .5-.5 Chiku-Ratte Olivier Kenta.... Andrei 0

                        For a score of 1 out of 5 :)

Hard to predict when you don't have all the data. Important info like: "Richard was born in ON" or that Larry will drive them from the airport... what can I say...I will try to do better next round!

The Song-Kleinman game is interesting as Song shows fighting spirit.

                              Quick patzer analysis:

                              Black didn't capture 6... dxc4 and White didn't reply cxd5.

Both players went B-K3 and B-Kb4.

16... Bxd7?! giving up a pawn for what? Future semi-open file on the doubled pawns? Expecting the cramping 16.... Rxd7 =

                              18. Bf4? =
                              computer says better is 18. Bg5 f6 19. Bf4 g5 20. Bc7 (20. e4 +/=) +/-

                              20. Nxd5!? hoping to get passed pawn compensation for the piece. Computer agrees it's best move, but still =/+.

                              If 20. cxd5? 21. Bxd5+ Kf8 22. Bd2 or 21.. Kh8 22. Rxd7 +/-

                              21. Ra1 an alternative to Ne7+

                              22. Nxc6? Drawing was 22. Ra1! Nb4 23. Rxb4 (23. Rxd7!? Rxd7 24. Nxc6) Kxe7 24. Rb7 =

                              24. Rxg7? a wild idea refuted by Black's 25. Rxc5. But losing 24. Bd7 Rc7 -/+

                              If 40. Kxd4 Rh1.

                              0-1
