The Grand Pacific Open is BC's largest chess tournament and this will be its 7th annual! The main event is a 6 round FIDE and CFC rated Swiss with $5000 in prizes guaranteed. There are also a number of side events which are free if you play in the main event and include an active tournament, Midnight Blitz with $100 in prizes, and a Bughouse tournament to finish off the weekend.

The top players last year included GM Nakamura (USA) and WGM Maisuradze (France). Who knows the surprise players who will show up this year.

I have a question for the organizers of the GPC

I noticed the following side event listed on the GPO site...

"Victoria Youth Championship: A CYCC qualifier for juniors. March 29. Open to all BC students (Canadian and International) born in 1995 or later. Players who score 50% or top 3 and meet Chess Federation of Canada requirements for residency or citizenship to qualify for the Canadian Youth Chess Championships. Players compete in age categories: U-8, U-10, U-12, U-14, U-16 and U-18. Start time 10:00 am Reg.: 9:30 – 9:45 am (some sections may be combined). G30 5 round Swiss or round robin depending on numbers in each section Prizes: Medals and ribbons."

Is this an alternative to the BCYCC for players wishing to qualify for the CYCC or is it meant as a qualifier for the BCYCC?

Yes. This event is an alternative to the BCYCC for players wishing to qualify for the CYCC. Although players may want to play in both.

We are just about 72 hours away until the first round at 6 pm. on "Good Friday" (March 29th, 2013.

We now can report nearly 100 entries! (Nearly 60 in the Open Section and another 40 in the Under 1800)

Need some good weather? We have it here right now as Spring is in full bloom and the skies are very sunny!
