Re: Canadian Junior - Round 4 at 10 am

I liked the Rd 4 game Szalay - Chiku-ratte. Yugoslav Attack [without Bc4] kingside versus Dragon long-diagonal on the queenside. My experience as White is that lower-rated Black players are afraid of the pawns at g4 & h4, whereas better players rip the queenside apart.

I'm sure both players are booked up. I thought I would look up this opening on the Internet and here's what I found:

    9. g4
    9. 0-0-0 d5 is fashionable 9... a5 see Dec 21 Budapest News [Kislik, E. (2361) 1-0 Szalanczy, E. (2259)] 9... Bxg4!? might work for class players [Solak (2586) 1-0 Dragi (2315) 2012 Kragujevac].

    10. 0-0-0
    10. Nxe6 [Nakamura (2775) 1-0 Robson (2614) 2012 St. Louis; Varga (2525) 1-0 Porat (2444) 2005 Budapest]

    12. a3
    12. Kb1 [Sutovsky (2700) 1-0 Uzhva (2246) 2012 Russian Ch]

    14. h4
    Ivanchuk played 14. Rh2 in a blitz game [Ivanchuk (2764) 1/2-1/2 Jones (2575) 2010 Warsaw]

    16. g5
16 Qg5 has been tried [Safarli (2527) 1-0 Durabayli (2413) 2008 World Jr, Gaziantep, or Hess 0-1 Kiewra 2011 Berkeley].

    16. Nh5
    Computer likes 16... b4 17. gxf6 [17. Nd5 Titgemeyer (2028) 0-1 Perestjuk (1957) 2011 Oberhof] bxc3 18. Bxc3 Rxc3 might have been better than Nh5 but Szalay never gets coordinated enough to sac the exchange with Rxh5 [as in Fischer 1-0 Gligoric 1959 Belgrade].

    21. Na2
    21. e5 [Meszaros (2392) 1-0 Porat (2369) Peniscola 2002].

    28. Nc6
    The computer likes f6 a move earlier, 28. f6 =

    37... g4 -/+
    37... Rc7+ 38. Kb3 Rcc2 threatens mate -+

    43. e6 -+
    43. Rxf6 =/+

    47... g3
    47... Rcc2 threatens mate

    48... Rd8+ -/+

Black could have won the game with Rh8 coming down to h2 or h1 -+

    49... Kf5
    49... f5 slightly better

    50. Rd7? Re8 -/+
    50.. Rh8 crushes -+

    61. Rxb5 tablebase draw.
