  • George Gallagher

Is anyone familiar with George Gallagher? He was an active player in Quebec City in the early 1950's.

The reason I ask is that André Langlois of the Beloeil CC (near Montreal) reported to me that George (probably at least in his 80's) and his son attended his club recently. George claimed that when Bobby Fischer gave a simul in Quebec City (Feb. 25, 1964; +48,=0,-0) that Fischer stayed with him and they played quite a few skittles games.

    Can anyone verify this?

There are photos in the Quebec "Chronicle-Telegraph", and "l'Action" of Feb. 26, 1964, but no mention of names. Also - PH Nadeau's twice-weekly chess column in l'Action (Feb. 29, 1964) mentions that the expenses for a reception for Fischer just before the Quebec City simul were covered by a "local construction company" ("le geste d'une compagnie de construction de la Ville qui a assumé entièrement les frais de réception à Bobby Fischer"). He came by plane from Montreal.
