  • Eric Hansen: How much longer before GM title awarded?

The new FIDE ratings are out, for January 2013, and Canada's Eric Hansen may be the highest-rated IM in the world, at 2568. :)

Eric has already completed his norms for the GM title, as of the Istanbul Olympiad 2012. :)

Yet FIDE still lists Eric as only an IM.

My question is this: How much longer does Eric have to wait before FIDE gets around to awarding his GM title? Are we talking a few more days, a few more weeks, a few more months, or a few more years? One would think that if he were Russian, it would have already happened by now.

Why not to check with an official sources - FIDE website?

    1st quarter PB 2013, Yerevan, ARM, 18-20 January 2013
    2012-10-05 2606771 Hansen, Eric CAN 2527 1992 INF

His final norm was during the Olympiad. It takes time to process papers (and pay some monies). The next and closest FIDE President's board meeting will in January.

    Thus nothing extraordinary.

    More titled players:
    Hambleton, Aman IM
    Thavandiran, Shiyam IM

    FIDE Arbiter: Ouimet, Bernard

I'm confused on the IM for Shiyam. I thought one of the requirements is to hit 2400 once on a rating update?
      Shameless self-promotion on display here

Mr. Zeromskis' reply seems to indicate that Eric's GM title application will be dealt with in a routine manner within three weeks. Let's hope so, and thanks for the information! :)

In case he did not rearch 2400 during the tournament somewhen (he or others may confirm/deny), the title can be awarded conditionally.

Thanks Egis - you are mostly correct.

FIDE normally has a Presidential Board meeting in the 4th quarter, during which Eric's GM title would have been awarded. It's not about money - the CFC submits the applications and our credit rating with FIDE is fine. The PBM is now in January, so Eric and Aman should both receive their titles, and Shiyam's conditionally on rating.

At least Eric is now the second highest rated IM in the world after this fine gentleman (who is scheduled to receive his GM title at the same time as Eric)
