  • Panjwani and Spraggett

    Hi:

I was wondering why Spraggett always keeps on mentioning Panjwani on his blog. He keeps on mentioning that Panjwani is one of Canada's top players.

Correct me if I am wrong, but his current rating is only 2402 and he has been stagnant for two years.

If any players should be mentioned as top Canadian players they are GM Eric Hansen who has a rating of 257x and IM Aman Hambleton who has a rating of 247X. IM Hambleton is on the verge of perhaps getting his second GM norm.

Seems that Mr.Spraggett sure has a liking for Panjwani.

Being ONE OF (the top) does not mean THE (top) player. The last time I checked, being an IM w/ a 24xx rating is good enough to be considered one of Canada's top players.

He clearly has a crush on Raja. Don't worry, though. Raja, by no fault of his own, will enrage Kevin and then he will post terrible false things about him accompanied by doctored photos of Raja with a goat. Truly classy.

Obsessing about whichever players are playing chess almost full time doing the circuit etc is naturally going to skew your opinion. Especially concerning FIDE rating only regular travellers are not going to be "stagnant".

Its not classy to ignore the past steller achievements of others just because they've decided chess is more of a hobby then a pursuit to some degree.
Panjwani was a stronger junior for numerous years then both of these players you've mentioned. He chose a different path. Given a year or two either one of these players could choose a similar path and then what ?

It could be that Spraggett recognizes talent and wishes more of these Canadian players had a better reason to stay in the game.

            From Kevin Spraggett's blog:

"Canada has some really good talent right now amongst the under-25 crowd. Raja Panjwani (who is studying in Oxford right now) as well as Eric Hansen and Aman Hambleton (both of whom have temporarily stopped their university studies to concentrate on chess) are capable of changing the map of Canadian chess. Eric already has the gm-title and Aman's latest result might very well count as a first gm-norm. And Raja's play this past summer has convinced me that he is very close to gm-strength...if not already one. Raja has already defeated about 20 gms in over the board play!"

There must be a lot of these 20 victories missing from my database!. I only have 5 or 6 of them.

I'm not Kevin, but I'll cover you.

Bindi will be a fine addition to any family. He's bright, cheerful and housebroken. He will provide love and affection though he needs constant attention as he is easily bored. Homes with large lots and plenty of room to run preferred.

True! At one point in my chess "career", I was in the top 209 players in Canada. But I wasn't at the bottom of the list; I was #208 :D

Maybe you are wrong, who knows.

KS on Eric Hansen and Aman Hambleton:

It has been a relatively good week , chess-wise, for my fellow Canadians. Youngsters Aman Hambleton and Eric Hansen achieved top-10 positions in the Open in Mexico. ..Congrats!
...Eric Hansen and Aman Hambleton (both of whom have temporarily stopped their university studies to concentrate on chess) are capable of changing the map of Canadian chess. Eric already has the gm-title and Aman's latest result might very well count as a first gm-norm.
                              Aman played creatively with 26. Ne6!? Bxe6 27. Rxf6!
The following is a typical example of Eric's play. Strong opening preparation combined with a good eye for tactical opportunities to turn the game into his favour. His opponent never had a chance...
When the smoke cleared GM Bator Sambuev (Quebec) and IM Eric Hansen (Alberta) tied for 1st place with 7.5 points each. A short series of tie-break games was played to decide which would officially become the 2011 Champion. Bator Sambuev emerged victorious. Congratulations to both players!
I followed closely the players' progress thru the tournament, especially as I was interested in how Canada's young talents are developing. In particular, I was very impressed with IMs Eric Hansen
IM Eric Hansen (born 1992) is from Calgary and is the best player ever from Alberta. He just recently won the Alberta Championship and this result in Guelph establishes him as one of Canada's most promising hopes. Eric should have qualified for the Canadian National Team last year, but was replaced by a Toronto player in an controversial and possibly illegal decision by an all-Toronto Selection Committee! This result at the 2011 Championship, where Eric finished ahead of 3-Toronto members of last year's National Team, must come with a lot of satisfaction. Well done, Eric!
Eric won the critical 8th-round game against Raja Panjwani that allowed him to go the final round tied for 1st place with Sambuev. White managed to catch his opponent with a well prepared opening and, despite Raja's stiff resistance and resourceful tactical play, Eric was able to push home his advantage, and with class. One of the most important games of this year's championship.
