The Jonathan Hawkins reference in Leonard Barden's chess column catches my fancy. Apparently he was "just an average club player" who was "self-taught from computers" and is now on the verge of becoming a GM (I'm assuming he may have earned his 3rd and final GM norm in Hastings).

Tangentially, I also note from his game collection at chessgames.com that he's the author of a chess book, 'Amateur to IM'.

Apparently he gets great results from his endgame prowess. (different from most young GM's in progress)

I rather enjoy this interview with Hawkins that I only now just stumbled upon, A Talk with the 'Hawk':

A little story from that interview bears repeating...

The guy can’t bring himself to take her queen, she’s balling her eyes out, he feels terrible, so he gets up from the board and finds an arbiter. He tells the arbiter his predicament, the arbiter tells him there’s nothing to be done, he has to go back and finish the game. So he goes back and sits down, and with a heavy heart captures the little girls queen. She suddenly sits upright, wipes her eyes, smiles, and makes her move, “checkmate”.

Jonathan Hawkins continues to gobble up GM norms but apparently still needs one international norm for his GM title.
