  • Andrew Bujalski

Andrew Bujalski has a new film, Computer Chess, now making its debut at Sundance.

Tangentially, the no script quote therein makes me instantly conjure up the British director, Mike Leigh, who'd be on my short list of all-time great directors (nothing Hollywood about his movies!) and who was perhaps best known for directing without scripts ('Naked', albeit not everyone's proverbial cup of tea, was a scriptless classic, imho).

not expecting much after BEESWAX which i really hated but i'm still curious to see with what he comes up... MUTUAL APPRECIATION and FUNNY HA HA were both delights

i've seen the leigh comparison before but i don't really agree with it. though his scripts are bare-bones leigh and the actors spend a lot of time developing dialogue in rehearsals, a luxury which is basically antithetical to mumblecore and its low budgets. i'm also not sure if bujalski is saying he won't use a script or if he simply hasn't written the script yet. his first three features were heavily scripted
everytime it hurts, it hurts just like the first (and then you cry till there's no more tears)

Here's a movie review to perhaps alter those expectations.
