  • For Shirov's fans - V.Petrov Memorial

GM A.Shirov not only plays, does simuls or gives lectures but organizes tournaments too :D
V.Petrov Memorial (in Jurmala, Latvia) is one of his achievements. V.Petrov was the strongest Latvian players before the WWII. However he was doomed by soviets in Gulag in 1943.

The tournament attracted many his (Shirov's) chess-friends: Invanchuk, Dreev, Khalifman, etc. All results at http://chess-results.com/tnr77638.as...det=YES&wi=984
Several games are transmitted at http://tiesraide.rtu.lv/petrovmemorial13/live.htm Previous rounds games at http://www.sahafederacija.lv or a direct link http://tiesraide.rtu.lv/petrovmemori...orial-2013.pgn
    Three more rounds on Sunday.

Would you know more about the circumstances Petrov was arrested and died in Gulag? Wikipedia article focuses on his chess achievements, and briefly notes when and on which basis he was arrested, but no more details...

The most recent details are at http://www.chesspro.ru/_events/2007/voronkov_rc44.html
The arrest was done after "three chess players" made a false denunciation.
The death parts seems very complicated. It is unclear when and where. "Officially" as in wiki - pneumonia in Vorkuta. Unofficially some talks that it might happened ~1947 in Georgia.

Thank you Mr. Zeromskis for the details. The article looks interesting...but it is in Russian - I know the characters and few words, but not enough to read it. Anyways, good for Shirov that he is taking care of such an event.
The history of Gulag is virtually unknown to the public despite the Archipelag Gulag by Solzenitzin.
