  • Candidate pairings.

In the first 3 rounds of the London tournament 3 Russian players have played with one another. Question: was it the result of random pairings (the probability is very low, 1/28 = 3.57 %) or it was the initial intention of the organizers / FIDE (like Interzonals in 60-s, 70-s and 80-s) ?

    yes, it was artificial pairings.

"As we were told, FIDE had to perform the drawing of lots twice, to make sure that the three Russian players would play each other in rounds 1, 2, 3 and 8, 9, 10 (as stipulated in the regulations)."

" The players who are from the same federation will play each other in rounds 1 and 8 (if only two) and if up to four players are from the same federation in rounds 1, 2, 3 and 8, 9, 10. "

      From the FIDE Handbook

      3. Candidates Tournament Regulations
      Tournament Format & System

The 8 players shall play a double round robin tournament (14 rounds). The players who are from the same federation will play each other in rounds 1 and 8 (if only two) and if up to four players are from the same federation in rounds 1, 2, 3 and 8, 9, 10.
