The 1973 FIDE rating list showed 85 GM's. One was rated over 2700 - Fischer at 2785. Here are all the GM's from that list rated over 2500. Compare this list with today's list - the average chessplayer will recognize almost every name on the 1973 list, whereas there are many names on today's list which even I have never heard of.

Would today's #1 player be able to beat the #10 and #15 players 6-0 as Fischer did (against Larsen and Taimanov)? I can't see it happening.

Currently - now there is only one player on the top 100 from any of the components of the former Yugoslavia - 97th-ranked Ivan Ivanisevic (2653) of Serbia.

Civil wars tend to negatively affect many things in a country - chess being one of those things.

Impressive number of Yugoslavs on this list.

All those Yugoslav's were legendary chess players (yes world legends). That was an unique time period.

I recognize all of them, but you have to make the effort. One thing for sure they have in common - they are all very, very good. The competition for the 2700 mark is ferocious. Its a different world nowadays. I was just having a conversation with somebody from India. Just India alone there are many households spending over $1000 a month for grandmaster training for their kids. In the 90's there was only one grandmaster, Vishy Anand. Now how many?

India has 31 GM's - 2 of these GM's are women.

(in the FIDE lists, it appears that if a woman becomes a GM, she loses her WGM title. There are 28 females with the GM title worldwide).

Hopefully I'll be able to announce some exciting news regarding my chess plans soon. I can confirm that I won't be returning to school this fall and will continue to focus on being a professional player.
