Two other strong Canadian Masters are also competing: IM Zhe Quan for New York University and NM Sebastian Predescu for Harvard (both on first board).

          Re: 2008 Pan American Intercollegiate

          Hello.

The Pan-American competitions are always an adventure.
          This year, we sent:

A - Bindi Cheng, David Peng, Alex Ferreira, Evan Sonkin
B - Leon Perelman, Stuart Brammall, Alexander Safir, Jason Dickson

Bindi and Evan were joining us there from Vancouver and New York respectively, while the rest of us had the misfortune of going from Toronto.
The weather was terrible and our 7:50am flight was canceled. We finally left Toronto at 5:30pm or so and missed the first round the night of the 27th. Both our teams were awarded half point byes.

Arriving in Dallas around 9pm, we checked into the Marriott, quite a luxurious hotel where the tournament also took place. The people of UTD (University of Texas at Dallas) did a terrific job organizing the event, and had several TDs and assistants from what I observed.
Simultaneously running in the same hall were a U20 scholastic event and an Open tournament. Possibly up to 40 people in each. In the scholastic event, the winner was awarded a 4-year scholarship at UTD!

With 29 teams, the Pan-Ams was by far the main event. Chicago was also sending a team, but one of their players had his/her flight canceled as well but was not able to get a new one in time, so the other 3 players ended up playing in the Open tournament.

Food in Texas is cheap although in the area we were in, (likely some suburb of Dallas) we had only variety of fast foods within walking distance. Not a very pedestrian-friendly place. The weather, sunny, windless days with temperatures from 10-15 was a bonus compared to Toronto.
Wireless was not free and we were essentially out of touch with the rest of the world for those 3 days.

          Chess:

The TDs felt it was appropriate to add 50 points to each of our CFC ratings for seeding purposes. I am not sure they're aware of our boon from two years ago and how we're now adding participation points. Maybe there still is a difference.

Our B team is really the one that should be congratulated! Although with a slow start, the team really came together in the second half of the event.
They clearly outperformed their seeding and took points from ~2000 avg rated teams in the last 2 rounds. This clinched them Top International Team, by passing our A team in the last round.

The A team went through some inconsistencies and underperformed.

Zhe Quan from New York University shared board prize with an impressive 5.0/6. Sebastian Predescu from Harvard also had a good performance finishing with a plus score.

University of Texas at Dallas, Team B, won the overall competition on tie-breaks, shared with University of Maryland at Baltimore County.
UTD had 1 GM and some 8 IMs between their top teams, and UMBC fielded 3 GMs and 1 WGM. We missed our chance to play up against a monster team when our A team failed to score against UTD C team, avg 2300 rating.

It's quite a challenge to compete with some of these schools.
From what I gathered, UMBC, UTD, University Texas Brownsville, Texas Tech and Miami Dade College all invest heavily on chess programs.
Texas Tech is also apparently being coached by Susan Polgar, who was on site every day.
Next year the Pan-Ams will be organized by Texas Tech, by the coast.

The site above has all the standings. On a side note, the above site seems to be unavailable in Beijing according to one of our chess colleagues who is there at the moment. I have no idea why.

You may be able to see some games through the monroi site.

Congratulations to our B team for a great performance!
