The "former child chess prodigy" heading first grabbed my attention:

Upon further research, it would appear that one bad tournament in Russia at the age of 11 turned Gavin Extence away from the path of competitive chess.

I'm searching the Internet, trying to find any evidence of his competitions (which would have been in the 1987-1993 range). None of his games in my 5 million+ game database.

He was born and raised in Swineshead. :-)

The ECF rating database shows him with a "grading" of 109 in 1994 and 112 in 1995 (i.e. age of 12 or 13). That would be in the 1500-1550 range.

I wonder how many genuine child prodigies there have been over the course of time in the chess world? Is there a list somewhere and it would be fairly extensive. A grading of 1500 - 1550 does not make a child prodigy. Canada has the distinction of having Jeff Sarwer (probably the most famous) but maybe not the best. US had Josh Waitzkin - again not the best but arguably the most famous - although Sammy Reshevsky amongst many others comes to mind. My current favorite is Jutta Hempel. Does anybody know who she was?
