So I guess in response to

"Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it."

    you are saying

"That was then -- this is now."

It's a silly quote. More often wrong than right. It doesn't explain why Chamberlain who was very familiar with the history of The Great War, allowed himself to be duped by Hitler into a passive stance that was a cause of WW2. Yeah, he knew history. Yeah, he repeated it. Yeah the world repeated another world war. It doesn't explain why the French who knew Germany very well didn't come out of their fortifications to face Hitler when the Nazis crossed the Rhine. Hitler was ready to run back into his hole back then. It doesn't explain why the Japanese, who knew from the Great War that it was better to side with the Allies, decided to switch sides and ally with Hitler. They also knew that if the US got involved they would win any war. Still they provoked the US into entering the war by attacking Pearl Harbour - an attack they botched because they did not wipe out the entire US aircraft carrier force that wasn't even in port. And that was even given that a lot of the Japanese had gone to school in the US! So much for the silly quote. But I guess we are doomed to keep hearing it from hipsters and anyone else who wants to sound profound.

Not least because he finds it often quoted by those who know little else about history and take an overly simplistic view of it.

It's right up there with all men are created equal but some more equal than others. Those two sayings are all you need to sound impressive at dinner parties.

Sounds like a passage from Lord of the Rings.

Those who cannot remember algebra are doomed to repeat it as well.

    Hikaru,

Anand was ranked #1 in the world in 2006, but sadly he was not the World Champion when Charbonneau beat him. Topalov (FIDE) and Kramnik (PCA) were the World Champions at that time. Anand was the undisputed World Champion the following year.

The only other player that also beat a soon-to-be World Champion (that I know of) was Abe Yanofsky, when he beat Botvinnik in 1946. Botvinnik became World Champion in 1948.

As much as I would really love to become an IM or a GM, I would never feel satisfied with gaining a title that I didn't earn. If I can't play at the strength of the title I just bought, then what's the point in buying it?

Haven't board prizes been changed to performance rating? Seem to recall Eric finished quite high on his board.

No kidding... the sequence of events that lead to this thread getting so sidetracked is kind of amusing.
