This is a cut and paste of the information on the Michigan Chess Festival on Facebook from Alan Kaufman the tournament organizer. This is really a first class USCF event with lots of GM's and IM's already known to a number of Canadian players. It is back in Dearborn, Michigan at a nice and relatively inexpensive hotel (or at least it was the last time it was held there).
Hi folks. A three part "info" piece about the Fall Festival, starting with this, "part the first."
A word about the "venue." This year, we return to the site of the first Fall Festival, now under new management. The Hotel is now known as the "Adoba." You can look the hotel up here on Facebook, or at their website: http://www.adobadearborn.com/
We had a fantastic time there in 2011. We are <very> happy to return for this year's tourney.
The overall dates of the Fall Festival will be October 23-27. The featured event will be a 9 round, FIDE rated norm possible tourney, which will take place October 23-27. There will also be a traditional 5 round weekend Swiss, to take place either on three day or two day schedules (Oct 25-27 or Oct 26-27...like I said..."traditional"). Also, a 4 round U1000 Swiss will take place on Saturday October 26.
There will be excellent vendors. Probably more "festival" announcements (ie: lectures, but not limited to that) to follow.
Second:
We're making good progress obtaining commitments from GMs and "internationals" for the 9 round FIDE rated "norm possible" 9 rounder. Several prominent players have already announced their intention to compete. Look for more announcements in both the near future, and later on.
The prize fund for the 9 round FIDE tourney will be as follows:
1st: $4,500, 2nd: $2,500, 3rd: $1,500, 4th: $800, 5th: $500, 6th: $200
U2400: 1st: $1,000, 2nd: $500,
U 2250: 1st: $500
The tourney will be award considerable USCF "Grand Prix" points, since the prize fund is substantial, and the tourney will be "enhanced."
"Conditions" for GMs and others: All GMs, and IMs and WGMs who play for federations other than the USA (in other words, "internationals") receive an entry fee waiver, subject to the following: 50% of up to the first $400 of any prize won by a player who received an "entry fee waiver" will be deducted from such player's prize. The maximum such total deduction will therefore be $200. Some additional or different "conditions" may be negotiated between individual competitors and Michigan Chess Festival LLC.
An updated tourney website should be available soon.
Third:
The traditional weekend Swiss will have an improved (less expensive!!) entry fee than prior Fall Festivals. To give you an idea (the actual entry fees will be sort of "sliding scale" with prices increasing as the tourney date draws closer): The approximate EF for the 5 round "Open" will be around $90 (less for very early entrants!); the approximate EF for the U1800 section will be about $70, and the approximate EF for U1400 will will be $50.
I can be specific about prizes.
For the 5 round "Open:" 1st: $1,000 2nd: $600, 3rd: $400, 4th: $200
Also in the "Open" section:
U2200: $450, $250, $100;
U2000: $400, $250, $150, $100
Potential competitors will note that this is a significant prize fund for a "week-end" Swiss. We've improved the prizes available to "A" players, a specific result of suggestions made by active Michigan players!
U1800 Section: 1st: $600, 2nd: $300, 3rd $200
Also in the U1800 section: U1600: $350, $250, $100
U1400 Section: 1st: $400, 2nd: $250, 3rd: $150
Also in the U1400 Section: U1200: $250, $150
Finally, the U1000 EF will be $25 or so (again, depending on time entered). This year, based on <extensive> feedback, the U1000 tourney will award trophies and medals, but NO cash prizes. ALL players scoring 2.5 or more will receive at least a medal. Trophies (some big ones, of course...smiles) will be awarded for 1st 2nd and 3rd (based on tiebreaks, if necessary) in the overall U1000. Also, trophies will be awarded to first U800, first U600, first U400 and first unrated.
