General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
I am tired of checking both old and new Chesstalk (and even thinking about posting stuff on both sides) so I declare here and now that I will only read or post here on the New ChessTalk.
Those who are arguing to keep the "old" ChessTalk board seem to do so much more vehemently than those who are arguing to switch boards to this one. I don't know why this board is so difficult to work out. It's nearly identical to the old board, just with some different colours and some new graphics. I also like the versitility and ease of use when it comes to posting pictures, url links, and quotes. Also, you can even have an avatar.
On a possibly related note, it seems like the tone of this board is much more civil and less confrontational. The other board isn't neccessarily a very friendly place to be at all times.
I agree Luke... maybe most of the cranky people are still on the old board? :p
Give it time though and I'm sure the real character will shine through... haha
The old board worked well and had minimal bells and whistles but it has some serious drawbacks: posts are not archived, searching is difficult etc. I don't necessarily think this is the best forum software I've ever seen, but Chevrolet versus Ford rule applies here.
Yes, there is that aspect... I am sure the south end of a northbound horse will move here eventually (all of them). The witty exchanges and repartee are hard to give up I must admit. :D
Technically - the posts are not archived on the old board - but you can always use the "Way Back Machine" and you might see the old post you were looking for :-)
The following link shows you the postings for Chesstalk on Oct. 5, 2001. The same subjects (Olympiad team, CFC magazine etc.) and the same posters (Daswani, Armstrong, Smith, etc.) so some things never change. (however - you probably can't see the contents of any of the messages). (whatever happened to Robert Brewster - a frequent poster at the time?)
Panic time. Now I have to learn the new site, since I certainly will not want to miss your gems of wisdom. I sure wish I knew how to insert a smiley face here.
How can you set the colours so that the messages you have already read are indicated.
That's one item that was good about old site. But it doesn't work for me here. (insert frown here)
I'm trying to play around with it to make it obvious without screwing ALL the colours up. Right now unvisited posts are red. The problem is this looks funny in Hybrid mode... I'll keep playing with it when I have time.
Is it possible to make a buttom which would go to the last unread message assuming a user uses a linear mode? (with the proper quotation it is the best :p ) Like here (in russian) http://kasparovchess.crestbook.com/s...ction=show_new
Chesstalk has a "go to last post" right now but that is not sufficient.

(The main site ( http://www.archive.org ) is a fantastic source of old public-domain audio and video.)
Christ's sake!
1. Who WAS C.E. Winchester?
2. "i cant read much french but im assuming u said the page couldnt b displayed? maybe pierre meant www.bobbyfischer.net w/ the 'c' in there cuz thats the german way of spelling the name.... n he was a german (his dad was)." - ben daswani, age 14

Hall of Shame - Duncan Smith 27/9/2001, 1:51 am
Duncan replying to himself before anyone else gets a chance. Classic steez.
everytime it hurts, it hurts just like the first (and then you cry till there's no more tears)
I will have to make a decision on this old board new board thing in the next 10 days...I am hoping this will have given people enough time to get use to the new board...
