  • Wow! Hal Bond and Michael von Keitz you guys are awesome!

We just had a post about chess promotion and the CFC. Unawares to many there is a Canadian chess community. (despite some curmudgeon posters who dont contribute and would never accept such a possibility) A perfect example is Hal Bond abd Michael von Keitz stepping forward to the plate in a big way and getting Mon Roi to the Canadian Open in Ottawa! You guys have done a tremendous service and my hats off to you!

I totally agree that Hal Bond and Michael Von Keitz are doing a tremendous service for chess in Canada but these are more on a personal level. How many people are like Hal and Michael ? I would prefer if CFC/CMA would be doing a way much concerted effort to bring up chess in Canada.....

I disagree. How many people are like Hal and Michael? - well they are unique - but there are many, many others helping - all contributing to the CFC movement and chess in Canada. - not personal but for the benefit of many others. I'll let others speak for a concerted effort by CFC/CMA but I know that Larry has undertaken several initiatives and finally with CFC/CMA cooperation Im sure many more are coming.

I agree that there are many people volunteering for the good of chess in Canada...the list is endless but again as I stressed - CFC as an official body are not doing a concerted effort to bring up chess in Canada....I know that Michael Von Keitz ( as the ex president ) did a good job but he just could not bring the desired changes....Larry is doing a great job for chess in Canada....and so far I can only see that CMA gave a contribution to Eric Hansen and Aman Hambleton for their venture in Europe.....Isnt CFC should be doing better than CMA ?
Paul Roschman and Bob Gillanders are doing a great job in Missisauga but again I stressed these are more on an individual effort....

In short - can chess be a sports on a professional level or just on an amateur level ?

No idea what the Monroi status is for tonight (Friday), but Thursday it was in a state in which some (top) players were provided with the devices (several not using such provided devices), but no live broadcasts.

I know the Monroi devices are cute, but the DGT boards (although expensive!) do NOT require the players to actually DO anything other than makes the moves on the board. I always wondered what some of the top GMs thought about having to use a Monroi to essentially 'record their game' for the crowd. I guess some are ok with the slight additional chore but it seems some are not ok with it.

It seems to me that DGT technology may be somewhat dated now? Surely they should have brought out a version 2 by now with wireless and cheaper components?
I guess I should check with them! Who is the prime supplier of DGT? There are a lot of Google hits... most are resellers I think.

According to the "find a dealer" tab at http://www.dgtprojects.com , Chess and Math is listed. :-) (although maybe only for clocks).

Re: Wow! Hal Bond and Michael von Keitz you guys are awesome!

                Thanks for posting Hans.
FWIW a few hours ago Hal was having mixed feelings about that post, since he and MvK had put in 2.5 hours yesterday and 7+ hours today before (fingers crossed) getting them to work at 5:03pm.

People to add to that "thank you":

Zelka (I don't know her last name) from Monroi spent several hours on Skype with MvK helping get the devices set up for tonight; and
Patrick MacDonald used up all the minutes on MvK's phone card sharing his expertise with the devices (AFAIK they are actually Patrick's devices, he has loaned them to Hal and Michael and the Open.

As of 5:03 pm EST, we have 9 operational Monroi devices in the top room, ready to go.

                You can watch the games on the event website here;

or on the Monroi site here.

NOTE: as explained on our website page, the "Error" box is just an HTML glitch: click OK and you can go to the games.

So... we expect to have live games tonight, starting just after 6:30 pm, and for the final round on Saturday....

... assuming the Hotel's router doesn't burn out again, and assuming the big storm blowing through Ottawa tonight doesn't cause power outages...
                (yes, that's me being optimistic

Yes I know Zjelka Milobabic and she is awesome and by the way you are awesome as well John, in many ways. (not to make you blush or anything).

Just for the record, her name is spelled Zeljka Malobabic - she has been fantastic at prior CYCCs, making sure that some top boards got Mon Roi devices so that parents and other spectators could watch games live, solving technical problems, etc. It's too bad she wasn't there for this CYCC - I had heard that a Mon Roi employee was sick, so if it's Zeljka, I hope you are better!

Brilliant work! Thanks to all who were involved. I think the CO organizers likely owe MvK and HB a cold one (probably already taken care of...)
                        This is very nice indeed.

I had the same problem but if you click the compatibility symbol on internet explorer the pieces appear.
