  • Peak FIDE rating for Canadian players

Just short time before Eric will pass 2600 rating mark (2584 now), I was curious to find the top 3 Canadian players based on their highest ever FIDE rating.

This is what I was able to find, base on published ratings (without considering rating inflation):

    MEN:

    1. Spraggett, Kevin (JAN 2007) 2633
    2. Bluvshtein, Mark (JUL 2011) 2611
    3. Lesiege, Alexandre (OCT 2001) 2589

    WOMEN:

    1. Yuan, Yuanling (JUL 2013) 2220
    2. Starr, Nava (APR 2004) 2215
    2. Bogdan, Lia (NOW) 2180

Easy to notice the 400 points difference between genders!

I'm pretty sure the difference is related to many more factors than gender... may as well say it is related to shoe size.

In the July 1987 FIDE rating list, Kevin Spraggett (at 2580) was ranked 25th (in a pool of 5,019 rated players). There were 241 GM's on the list.

Today - you would need a 2724 rating to be in 25th place (1387 GM's now - that number is double the year 2000 total).

Lots of interesting data, including titled player counts, and semi-annual FIDE lists for download (1967-2001) at http://www.olimpbase.org/index.html?...2Fsummary.html
More recent data available at the FIDE site.
