  • 2009 Canadian Post-Secondary Team Championship: what's happening

Tonight at 7 p.m., 18 post-secondary teams will begin play in two sections, at Queen's University in Kingston, for the 2009 Canadian Championships!! It's a five-round team Swiss format event.

The organizers have secured IA / IO Hal Bond of Guelph as Chief Arbiter, and Hal's experience and energy ensures a smoothly-run operation, which will hopefully feature plenty of great fighting chess and outstanding sportsmanship from everyone.

Pre-tournament favourites in the championship section consist of Western, Dalhousie, and U of T. Internationally-titled players taking part include FM Raja Panjwani and FM Jonathan Tayar (Western), FM Bindi Cheng (U of T), and FM Christian Stephens (Guelph).

Play continues Saturday and Sunday with two rounds per day, with the awards set for about 6 p.m. on Sunday.

The organizational meeting is planned for Saturday afternoon, where the 2010tournament site will be decided.

Results and other news will be posted here as soon as they are available, along with pairings for the next round.

A selection of interesting games from the event will be posted at the website chess5.com.

Media inquiries and requests for further information can be directed to me at frankd_chess@hotmail.com.

    2009 Canadian Post-Secondary: rd. 1 highlights, rd. 2 pairings

Round one is in the books in Kingston, and after a late start, caused by travel delays for some teams, plenty of hard-fought chess was played in a smoothly-run round. Hal Bond has the respect of everyone present at the event, and he took charge and established calm conditions and good behaviour. There were no disputes.

The major upset in the top group saw Ottawa A, seeded 8th, draw Toronto A, the third seed. Top seeds Western (1) and Dalhousie (2) both won 4-0, over Carleton and Queen's A respectively, but the Dalhousie-Queen's match was very hard fought with Dal in trouble on three of four boards some three hours into the match. Their experience told down the stretch. Top-rated FM Raja Panjwani, board one for Western, needed only 21 moves to carve up Aleksandr Toxanity (unrated but apparently stronger than Carleton's board 2, a 2000+ lady player). This game will be posted shortly on chess5.com. Perhaps the biggest upset saw Ottawa's board 4, unrated Kar-Fai Gee, defeat 1904-rated Leon Perelman in 18 moves. This game will also go to chess5.com. There are many other good games which will eventually go to chess5, but it is late and I need to sleep before tomorrow's big day with two rounds and the planning meeting. More detail will follow later on round one.

    Round two pairings:
Over 1750 (first-named team has White on board one):
    Waterloo A vs Western
    Dalhousie vs Guelph
    Carleton vs Toronto A
    Ottawa A vs Queen's A
    Waterloo B vs Toronto B

    Under 1750:
    Queen's C vs Toronto C
    McMaster vs Queen's B
    Ottawa B vs Western B
    One-point bye: McGill

      2009 Canadian Post-Secondary: round 2 results, round 3 pairings

Round two in Kingston saw several Master vs Master clashes on the top boards. And Guelph scored a 3-1 win over second seed Dalhousie, which is a bit higher rated. FM Christian Stevens won for Guelph over NM Gary Ng on top board; this game will go to chess5.com later. Western defeated Waterloo 3-1, with FMs Panjwani and Tayar winning on the top two boards for Western. Panjwani won a hard struggle as Black in the King's Indian over NM Kyle Morrison, while Tayar won quickly against the Najdorf Sicilian played by Iulia Lucau-Rodean. This game will go to chess5.com soon, while Panjwani's win will also appear later.

The only teams with a perfect score will meet in round three, with Western having White on board one against Guelph.

Toronto A defeated Carleton 3-1, but FM Bindi Cheng, board one for Toronto, lost to Aleksandr Turanidy-Torres in an interesting game. This game will go to chess5.com later. Carleton has masters on its top two boards, but has not got on the team scoreboard yet.

Here are the pairings for round 3:
      Over 1750:
      Western (2) vs Guelph (2)
      Toronto A (1.5) vs Dalhousie (1)
      Queen's A (1) vs Waterloo A (1)
      Toronto B (1) vs Ottawa (0.5)
      Carleton (0) vs Waterloo B (0)

      Under 1750:
      Toronto C (2) vs McMaster (1.5)
      McGill (1) vs Western B (1)
      Ottawa B (0.5) vs Queen's C (1)
      BYE: Queen's B.

        2009 Canadian Post-Secondary: rd3 results, rd4 pairings

Western won its third straight match, by 3.5-0.5 over Guelph. FM Jonathan Tayar, board two for Western, won his third straight game over strong opposition, defeating Julien Touboulic (2211 based on one event). This game is on chess5.com, along with several other new entries. Toronto A drew its match with Dalhousie, as Jonathan Gottlieb, board two for Dal, pulled off a miracle rescue in mutual time trouble to swindle Geordie Derraugh, who had been a little better for much of the game.

Western, with a one-point lead in match standings over the field, will play Toronto in round four, with Toronto White on board one. Toronto is also unbeaten, but has drawn two matches.

        Pairings:
        Over 1750:
        Toronto A vs Western A
        Guelph vs Waterloo A
        Dalhousie vs Ottawa A
        Toronto B vs Carleton
        Queen's A vs Waterloo B

        Under 1750:
        Western B vs Toronto C
        McMaster vs Queen's C
        Queen's B vs McGill
        BYE: Ottawa B.
