  • Zohran Mamdani elected Mayor of New York City

In the recent New York City mayoral election, 34-year-old Zohran Mamdani was elected by a strong margin, and will take office on January 1, 2026, for a four-year term, succeeding current Mayor, Democrat Eric Adams, who dropped out of the race over the summer.

Mayor-elect Mamdani was born in Uganda; he is of Muslim and Hindu heritage, with his father a Muslim and his mother a Hindu. His family moved to the USA when he was a child.

Mayor-elect Mamdani, a member of the Democratic Party, identifies himself as a Democratic Socialist. He won the Democratic Party primary last summer, defeating former New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an Independent in the 2025 mayoral race, as well as Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.

Mayor-elect Mamdani is a 2014 graduate of the prestigious Bowdoin College, in Africana studies. He was married for the first time earlier this year.

Mayor-elect Mamdani met with USA President Donald Trump at the White House in Washington on Friday. He has called President Trump a fascist and a dictator, and said after the apparently productive meeting that he stands by those comments. President Trump (born 1946, now age 79) was born and raised in New York City, to a very wealthy family.

Since Mayor-elect Mamdani was born outside the USA, he is ineligible to run for the federal office of president, as per the USA Constitution.

The mayoral election outcome is one of the most surprising results in my lifetime, and perhaps in anyone's lifetime.
