  • F. Bohatirchuk’s Canadian Chess Games

The first two volumes of Fedor Bohatirchuk Doktor Zhivago sovetskikh shakhmat by Sergei Voronkov have been published. My copies took eight weeks to come from Moscow. I paid 60 USD but I have seen prices by retailers ranging from 73 to 111 USD for the set.

    Hard covers with 480 + 464 pages + 20 pages of photos Tome 1 covers 1892-1935 and Tome 2 1935-1984.

A third volume, to be published, will be devoted to the politics and scientific achievements of Dr. Bohatirchuk.

The volumes have two-column pages for the games with large diagrams. Photos and line drawings are liberally spread throughout the text. Cross tables are at the end of each book and the second terminates with an extensive bibliography.

We shall have to see what the reviews say of the work as a whole.

I have had it suggested to me that listing the games played after he came to Canada might be useful. I transliterated the names back to English, if that is the right term, and found many familiar names from the chess past. I probably have made many errors and I would appreciate any corrections.

There are 61 “Canadian” games. For each I give the book game number, the opponents, event, date, the annotator and the opening code. Seven are middle or endgames, and for these I have just put “fragment”.

I think I have all the over-the-board tournament (not simul) games in CanBase.

Re: F. Bohatirchuk’s Canadian Chess Games

Thank you, Hugh. There are a number of exclusions. I have compared the book with Bohatirchuk’s CanBase game list and find that 22 of the 61 games are on it.

I was wondering where to get more of his correspondence games to play over when I read this by Tim Harding in Chess Mail 7/2005:

I used to think that it was only after coming to Canada that Bohatirchuk took up postal chess, but in fact he already started in 1948, outclassing the opponents he met in the overseas tournaments of the British Correspondence Chess Association. Those events are perhaps the least documented phase of his career and were apparently his first CC games (unless you count telegraph games played in the 1920s, which I included on MegaCorr4).

Clearly I must find the MegaCorr disk and see how many of B’s games are there.

Without looking closely there are 39 of Bohatirchuk's games in MegaCorr4 - I can send them to you in a PGN if you wish.

I assume the Voronkov volumes are not meant to be comprehensive, e.g., only half Bohatirchuk's games from Vancouver 1951 are listed.

Thank you, Stephen. I have MegaCorr4 knocking around on my shelves somewhere and I’ll dig it out and look at the 39 games that are there.

No, the games quoted are a selection. There are 99 in the first volume and 110 in the second.

It would be marvelous if someone could put all of Bohatirchuk’s games in one volume with a suitable biography in English.

            How many games are there?

Chessgames.com has 224 in its database and 365chess.com has 195. I have not checked to see how many are duplications between the two.
Would a good estimate of the total be 500+ ? I have no idea how he balanced the scientific and political parts of his life with chess.

The author wrote (somewhere on the internet) that they managed to collect ~450 games. (They started with ~200.) They had intention to put all games, but they got too many and too much material to cover (that why you have TWO volumes LOL

The historic game Bohatirchuk - Divinsky, Canadian Ch. 1951 appears on pp. 273-276 of Volume 2 with comments by Nathan Divinsky. Interested readers are invited to compare my analysis of this game, which appeared in BCCF Email Bulletin #242 (01 July 2012). Here is the link: http://www.chess.bc.ca/Bulletins/BCCFBulletin242.pdf
