General Guidelines
---- Nous avons besoin d'un traduction français!
Some Basics
1. Under Board "Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQs) there are 3 sections dealing with General Forum Usage, User Profile Features, and Reading and Posting Messages. These deal with everything from Avatars to Your Notifications. Most general technical questions are covered there. Here is a link to the FAQs. https://forum.chesstalk.com/help
2. Consider using the SEARCH button if you are looking for information. You may find your question has already been answered in a previous thread.
3. If you've looked for an answer to a question, and not found one, then you should consider asking your question in a new thread. For example, there have already been questions and discussion regarding: how to do chess diagrams (FENs); crosstables that line up properly; and the numerous little “glitches” that every new site will have.
4. Read pinned or sticky threads, like this one, if they look important. This applies especially to newcomers.
5. Read the thread you're posting in before you post. There are a variety of ways to look at a thread. These are covered under “Display Modes”.
6. Thread titles: please provide some details in your thread title. This is useful for a number of reasons. It helps ChessTalk members to quickly skim the threads. It prevents duplication of threads. And so on.
7. Unnecessary thread proliferation (e.g., deliberately creating a new thread that duplicates existing discussion) is discouraged. Look to see if a thread on your topic may have already been started and, if so, consider adding your contribution to the pre-existing thread. However, starting new threads to explore side-issues that are not relevant to the original subject is strongly encouraged. A single thread on the Canadian Open, with hundreds of posts on multiple sub-topics, is no better than a dozen threads on the Open covering only a few topics. Use your good judgment when starting a new thread.
8. If and/or when sub-forums are created, please make sure to create threads in the proper place.
Debate
9. Give an opinion and back it up with a reason. Throwaway comments such as "Game X pwnz because my friend and I think so!" could be considered pointless at best, and inflammatory at worst.
10. Try to give your own opinions, not simply those copied and pasted from reviews or opinions of your friends.
Unacceptable behavior and warnings
11. In registering here at ChessTalk please note that the same or similar rules apply here as applied at the previous Boardhost message board. In particular, the following content is not permitted to appear in any messages:
* Racism
* Hatred
* Harassment
* Adult content
* Obscene material
* Nudity or pornography
* Material that infringes intellectual property or other proprietary rights of any party
* Material the posting of which is tortious or violates a contractual or fiduciary obligation you or we owe to another party
* Piracy, hacking, viruses, worms, or warez
* Spam
* Any illegal content
* unapproved Commercial banner advertisements or revenue-generating links
* Any link to or any images from a site containing any material outlined in these restrictions
* Any material deemed offensive or inappropriate by the Board staff
12. Users are welcome to challenge other points of view and opinions, but should do so respectfully. Personal attacks on others will not be tolerated. Posts and threads with unacceptable content can be closed or deleted altogether. Furthermore, a range of sanctions are possible - from a simple warning to a temporary or even a permanent banning from ChessTalk.
Helping to Moderate
13. 'Report' links (an exclamation mark inside a triangle) can be found in many places throughout the board. These links allow users to alert the board staff to anything which is offensive, objectionable or illegal. Please consider using this feature if the need arises.
Advice for free
14. You should exercise the same caution with Private Messages as you would with any public posting.
Well, if I must be labelled, I'd prefer to harken back to the source, Karl Marx. I'd prefer "Marxist". It avoids all that unfortunate USSR, Vietnam, etc. baggage associated with "communist".
More people should read the philosophical/humanist early writings of the young Karl, before Das Kapital. They would be surprised, and I expect, impressed.

I have read it. I am not impressed particularly when you contrast his writings with the way he lived his life. Marxism has never worked anywhere. New experiments will predictably lead to situations where millions die at the hands of these social architects.

Hi Bob A.
Of course I was being sarcastic. I know you realize this, but just in case some others don’t, let me spell it out……….we both have been labeled “communists” from time to time, whenever we dare to question our so called free market capitalist system. The term Marxist also carries some heavy baggage, so I would steer clear of that one also. I don’t believe any one label can adequately define you, or me. But I think we should go with “free market social democrat”. What do you think?

Hi Bob G:
Yup!! Agree! In fact that is the one I use when I know the "Marxist" label is going to lead to trouble. I really find good in both, and politics is the art of the possible. So the NDP can become the next federal government of Canada (and will as the one with the famous name continues to implode!).
There is not even a Marxist Party of Canada to my knowledge (I believe it is the Marxist-Leninist Party of Canada, one I do not support). Sigh, I'm going to have to start my own MPC.

Governments bail out the failures. That's crony capitalism, not free-market capitalism.

2. I'm not a big history fan. So I'm not too concerned about the judgment of humanity on the Bolsheviks. My new "Canadian Marxist Party" (I've decided to change the name from the Marxist Party of Canada) will look forward, not backward. It will cut a new path, and be distinctively Canadian!!

Hi Bob,
I won't be voting for your new political party. I prefer the Conservatives.
Will you be fielding a full slate of candidates or running yourself? Possible there is a small wager in the success or lack thereof.
Re: Rob Ford and the ideology of "dark politics"
I think the infighting among liberals, leading to the near destruction
of the party, really hurt social programs in Canada. It's hurt the middle
class as well. Many among them distrust the NDP, and won't vote
for them. So they either vote for the PCs, or just don't vote.
Re: Canadian University Tuition - Evidence of/Consequence of Can. Income Disparity?
A university degree is becoming out of reach.
But training in those university courses is becoming dirt
cheap through sites like www.udemy.com, which offer massive
online courses.
The teachers there are getting rich, because class enrollments of over
10,000 are not uncommon. That site is even starting to make millionaires
out of chess trainers.
The online universities like University of The People are offering Bachelors
degrees in Computer Science, or Business Admin, for only the cost of exams,
and a once only fee based on country of residence. Virtually for free.
So don't be surprised if existing universities become defunct anyway.

I see Windsor is taking out ads in the Toronto papers to defend the proposed taxpayer subsidy of Chrysler. The latest scuttlebut was that Chrysler was trying to get the feds to subsidize design work that was done in Detroit already as part of the claimed "Canadian" investment eligible for subsidy.

Here's the kind of wages the auto industry in Canada is up against.
Re: Middle Class Income Growth?: Canadian Income Distribution
When Canada's housing bubble bursts in those inflated pockets, then they should do a new net worth calculation. As Warren Buffett has said, "Only when the tide goes out do you discover who's been swimming naked." There are a lot of people out there who "own" houses, think the stock market is too dangerous, and believe that their particleboard structure on a tiny plot of land is immune to fluctuations. Insanity.
