  • 2014 CYCC and CO (Montreal) : Great news!

We have great news for chess players from all around Canada.
As you probably already know, Montreal will organize the 2014 CYCC and CO. Our goal was, and still is, to make of the Canadian Open the biggest tournament of the past 30 years and to offer incredible playing conditions for CYCC participants.
We are glad to announce that we secured an incredible venue for the tournaments : the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth. It is, we believe, the first time that both the CYCC and the CO are held in a five-star hotel (the 2007 CYCC was held at the Fairmont Château Laurier, but not the CO). However, what is great about this deal is that players will only have to pay half of what the rooms usually cost (and less than a typical three-star hotel at that time of the year).

Both the CYCC and CO will be held during the Just for Laughs festival, the biggest humoristic festival in the World. People from all ages will enjoy a giant maze, shows, concerts, outdoor activities and hundreds of board games (and all this for free). The advantageous location of the hotel, in the middle of Downtown Montreal, right above Montreal’s train station and next to hundreds of restaurants and Montreal’s Chinatown will sure be a great plus for participants.

However, we even have better news! Thanks to the great deal we got from the hotel, we decided to raise the prize fund of the Canadian Open. The prize fund will now be of $25 000 (projected, but at least $20 000 guaranteed), while keeping entry fees as low as possible (probably starting at about $50!).

CYCC participants will be able to enjoy more activities, huge trophies and free entry for the Canadian Open! No profit will be made with this tournament, and all the surplus will be given back to the youth. You surely don’t want to miss this tournament! Winners will also have the incredible opportunity of going to the WYCC in South Africa, in one of Africa’s most touristic cities.

We are hoping to launch a website next week with more details on both tournaments. One thing is sure though, nobody will want to miss the 2014 CYCC and CO in Montreal.

              Hi Andriy,
They first announced the tournament as being held from July 24 - July 31, 2014 (at least, this is what we were told).
It's really unfortunate that both events are held at the same time (although not many Canadians usually play at the Panamerican), but organizing the tournament at another time of the year would have resulted in a huge drop in participation (mostly because of Quebec's Construction Holiday).

                Conflicting Dates - CYCC & Pan-Am's

                Oh, Oh!

Can. Juniors having to choose between playing locally at the CYCC (to get on the Can. WYCC team), or in Mexico at the PanAM's.

                Have we seen this before?

                  Re : Conflicting Dates - CYCC & Pan-Am's

There was no participant from Canada at the 2013 Pan-Am (as for most years it seems).

It's definitely not the first time that there's such a schedule conflict (ex. CYCC 2011).

                    Hi Felix:

I was not really complaining about the conflict. I know summer dates are difficult to organize to avoid them. And especially when the CYCC and CO are a tied bid.

I was more just alerting people to the problem that did arise in 2011 when there was a conflict, and juniors had to choose. At least now, hopefully, the rules re the CYCC and participation on the Canadian WYCC team are now clear and known. So juniors will make the choice knowing all the facts and consequences (in my view, this was the case in 2011).
