  • Montreal's rapid matches (IM Panjwani, IM Hébert, NM Chiku-Ratté, NM Prahov)

There will be two matches in Downtown Montreal (at the Square-Victoria).
    1) IM Jean Hébert, former Canadian Champion vs IM Raja Panjwani, former Canadian Junior Champion
    2) NM Valentin Prahov (80 years old) vs NM Olivier-Kenta Chiku-Ratté (14 years old).

The matches will start tomorrow, October 3rd, at 12:30. Time control is 15 minutes + 10 secs.
Thousands of people pass at this time of the day, so this will be an incredible opportunity to promote chess for a wider audience.

The event is sponsored by Alfid, the City of Montreal and the Quebec Ministry of Education, Recreation and Sports.

Hébert 1 Panjwani 0; Chkiu-Ratte 1 Prahov 0 in the first matches. They will play again Friday (with colours reversed). Beautiful day for outdoor chess (20 C and sunny) - the condo construction and a busy street intersection added to the challenge of playing. "Thousands of people" may have passed by, but there didn't seem to be more than about 20 watching the games at any given time. Possibly a location at the other (south) end of the square would have attracted more attention.

I also noticed that the south end seemed more busy (it's actually where I thought the players would be). In any case, the presence of medias (CBC, Journal de Montreal and 24 hours) will definitely reach quite a few people.

I will provide a more detailed report later.

Friday's matches look like they will be a little wet (the players are under shelter - but not spectators). I don't think I will pass by today- we'll let Felix make a report.

No rain finally. There were actually more people than yesterday.

Here's a (bilingual) report, with all the games and pictures.

Both games ended up in a draw today (not without fighting) and Hebert and Chiku-Ratté won their match.

When I try to access the link, I get:

              "Access denied"
"You are not authorized to access this page."

You are right. It's now fixed.
